State of the City: Reflecting on Achievements and Looking Ahead to 2024

The City of Twentynine Palms experienced a whirlwind of activity in 2023, all of which Mayor McArthur Wright discussed in his State of the City Address.

After a heartfelt introduction about how our community is more alike than different, he recounted the year's many accomplishments. Here are some highlights he shared:

Community Betterment: The City saw the opening of the Channel Trail, the renovation of the Luckie Park Pool, and the addition of a full-time Detective by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department dedicated to the exclusive service of the Twentynine Palms community.

Partnership: The City collaborated with Congressman Jay Obernolte to secure more than $2 million to defer costs associated with the study of the Sewer Project. Additionally, the City proudly continues to partner with the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms and Morongo Unified School District in programs such as Armed Services YMCA and Principal for a Day.

Celebration: Here is a list of the celebrations and recognitions hosted by the City in 2023:

  • Memorial Day Wreath Ceremony
  • Juneteenth Flag Raising
  • July 4th Celebration
  • Joshua Tree 55 Bike Ride
  • 87th Annual Pioneer Days Celebration
  • Veteran's Day Program

While McArthur Wright is passing the title of Mayor to Steven Bilderain in 2024, he will remain on the City Council as a dedicated public servant for the next three years. With the momentum gained in 2023, Twentynine Palms is ready to build on its successes in 2024.

Counting for Change: San Bernardino County in Need of Volunteers

In collaboration with the Office of Homeless Services and in consultation with the Institute for Urban Initiatives, the San Bernardino County Homeless Partnership is coordinating the 2024 Point-in-Time Count (PITC) on January 25.

The PITC is a count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January and is critical to securing grant funding as well as other resources for local communities to assist individuals who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

To accomplish this crucial survey, the County needs key community persons and volunteers from each city and all unincorporated areas to help organize and implement the homeless count in their communities. Volunteers must complete online training and possess an Android smartphone, iPhone, or iPad.
