State of the Movement, March 1st Dinner Set, New Women's Group, Upcoming Drag events, and more!

Dear Friends,

I was watching the "State of the Movement: Fighting Back, Pushing Forward" video shared by the Horizon's Foundation recently, with leaders from Lambda Legal, the Transgender Law Center, the National Task Force, and Gill Foundation that some of you may have seen as well. (You can watch it here, if you missed it.) Each of them had different wisdom to share about the needs of the community, but it was important to recognize that much of the legal resistance to the Trump Regime has been winning. Among the ways they shared were the phrases "Not Going Back," Meeting the moment," "Building Trans Power," " Leaderful, Aligning, Scaling," and "Kicking Their Ass." No, none of us were prepared for this moment, but we recognize that we have been here before, even able to organize from nothing a movement to save our men, to address the HIV/AIDS crisis. "It's in our muscle memory." Even when we don't get the court decisions we want, the courts have had Trans lawyers in front of them for the first time.

There was also important recommendations to show up for others, such as immigration, health care and more since those are also our Queer issues. Helping those in need, reaching out to those not yet involved, creating the community we need in our home regions are all good things we can do right now. Refer those who have experienced discrimination to the Lambda Legal Help Desk, since they have won 4 of their first 6 cases against the administration (with 2 pending) and are always looking for the right cases they can take to move the movement forward. All health care is gender affirming care, as we all have specific health care needs regardless of our gender. Protect Telehealth, and access to all forms of health care, including abortion care, from the various social and cultural places from which we each work. How do we work better with other allies and cross-organizing. How do we encourage our neighbors to discuss the economy in ways that are liberative for all of us? Christian Nationalist movements have been outspending us in a major way, and we can invest more in our own movement to increase the GSA networks, etc. They spent 50 years to get a state-rights win on abortion. If we spend 50 years working now, what kind of wins can we enshrine for our community? These are all conversations we should be having here in Solano County. What do we want to see in the next 5, 10, 15 and 50 years for Queer rights?

Our next gathering will be Gayme Night on Thursday, Feb. 5th at 7:00 pm in the Conference Room!

Like other LGBTQIA2S+ Centers, We Need Your Financial Support! Keep your Local Center Open by giving today!

Can you spare a few dollars to help keep the Center open during these trying times? LGBTQIA2S+ Centers across the state are experiencing a drop in donations, and your support is crucial to help us continue delivering the life-saving services our community depends on.

We are recognizing that the uncertainty since Trump returned to office has definitely affected giving for our life-sustaining programs. If you are in a place to share financially right now, we definitely need your help right now. You can even set up a monthly donation of as little as $5 a month, which helps us more than you can know.

If you are giving to our General Fund to support all of our programming, you can give through our portal on Zeffy at https://tinyurl.com/Give2SolanoPride. Donate today!

Stephan's Corner

Hey Solano Pride Community!

You have probably noticed that more Epstein files have been released. I have to admit that while I have watched the documentaries, read the articles, I am still even more disgusted and frightened by the lengths the powerful went to, just to rape children. It is horrific nightmare inducing content. We must hold them accountable and a deeper discussion must be made for even allowing this level of wealth. It has deeply blocked much of our progression for equity and equality, has put our Democracy completely in danger and stymied our ability to create innovations to curve climate change or make the living of each human on this planet, better. A reckoning needs to come from this knowledge. These wealth exploiters are always going to break laws, protect themselves and exploit the rest of us.

Bear witness, demand action and take breaks. We won’t get far if we are constantly at rage level response. Make sure to take care of yourself and ask for help when you need it.

Special SPC Poetry & Writing Anthology Benefit Project Announced! Call for submissions extended to March 15th, 2026.

It was a dark and stormy night
When at my desk I began to write
Of things poetic and such
And things that might impress me much. (apologies to Shania Twain)

Of talents wasted or quite unknown
Of slighted authors we bemoan
Yet, what light thru yonder window gleams?
Groupings of stories, prose, and poems, it seems.

Solano Pride doth beg your submission
With cheery smile and signed permission
To share your works for published glory
Be they sweet or silly or even gory

Make haste to share your treasured text
With brains afire and muscles flexed
They be due by end of next January
So send them to us and do not tarry!
                                                              M. West

One way and there are many depending on how one copes with the loss is to talk about what we are feeling, what we are going through and share those feelings and thoughts with others who may be experiencing the same just as you are. The grief counseling session is an avenue for people to continue their healing process.  More info, including the zoom link, at Kacen@solanopride.org or Tim Meyers at tjm1756@yahoo.com

MARSHA:

THE JOY AND DEFIANCE OF MARSHA P. JOHNSON

By Tourmaline

Black Transgender luminary Tourmaline brings to life the first definitive biography of the revolutionary activist Marsha P. Johnson, one of the most important and remarkable figures in LGBTQIA+ history, revealing her story, her impact, and her legacy.

“Thank god the revolution has begun, honey.” Rumor has it that after Marsha P. Johnson threw the first brick in the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, she picked up a shard of broken mirror to fix her makeup. Marsha, a legendary Black transgender activist, embodied both the beauty and the struggle of the early gay rights movement. Her work sparked the progress we see today, yet there has never been a definitive record of her life. Until now.

Written with sparkling prose, Tourmaline’s richly researched biography Marsha finally brings this iconic figure to life, in full color. We vividly meet Marsha as both an activist and artist: She performed with RuPaul and with the internationally renowned drag troupe The Hot Peaches. She was a muse to countless artists from Andy Warhol to the band Earth, Wind & Fire. And she continues to inspire people today.

Marsha didn’t wait to be freed; she declared herself free and told the world to catch up. Her story promises to inspire readers to live as their most liberated, unruly, vibrant, and whole selves.

TOURMALINE is an award-winning artist, filmmaker, writer, and activist whose work is dedicated to Black trans joy and freedom. She is a TIME 100 Most Influential Person in the World awardee and a Guggenheim Fellow. She has frequently appeared on ABC News, as well as in the New York Times and Vogue. Her art is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate, and the Getty Museum. She created the critically acclaimed film Happy Birthday, Marsha!, and she has directed Pride campaigns for Dove, Marc Jacobs, and Reebok. She previously worked with Queers for Economic Justice and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project. She lives in Miami, Florida.  Link.

 Louise Lawrence Transgender Archive

Ms. BOB TALKS & TALKS & TALKS

SHORT TALKS

(15 – 20 minutes, w/o Q&A)

HAVE YOU MET LOUISE?

(Requires PowerPoint) A casual introduction to transgender studies through the photography collection of the Louise Lawrence Transgender Archive (LLTA) in Vallejo, CA.  LLTA’s wide-ranging collection, gathered over a 40+ year period, has become a destination for researchers from three continents, members of the Bay Area trans community, filmmakers, professors, post-doctoral, graduate, undergraduate, and high school students, including  cadets from the Napa Valley College Police Academy.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS: Autobiographical Writing from Casa Susanna

(Requires PowerPoint) Casa Susanna was a mid-20th century Catskill Mountains resort that set aside some weekends for trans-women to vacation in their chosen gender.  This talk follows four trans-women as their trans-fem identities evolve.

GLAMOUR, DRAG, & DEATH: HIV/AIDS in the Art of Three Drag Queen Painters

(Requires PowerPoint) An exploration of  how Doris Fish, Miss Kitty Litter, and Jerome Caja, three serious painters, performers, and prominent, even notorious, San Francisco drag queens, reacted to their HIV/AIDS diagnosis in their art and writing.  Each response is unique. Together they represent a wide-ranging reaction to the pandemic and their own mortality. This richly visual talk is enhanced by photographs by Daniel Nicoletta, one of the premier documentarians of San Francisco’s LGBTQI+ community.

NOT TRYING TO PASS AS ANYTHING BUT OUTRAGED:

Cross-Dressing and Drag in Protests, Demonstrations, and Social Activism

by Ardel Haefele-Thomas & Ms. Bob Davis

(Requires PowerPoint) Leslie Feinberg felt that certain drag performances – specifically cross-dressed political protests – subvert gender norms, so they were included in hir book, Transgender Warriors. This presentation explores some historic drag from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries when socio-economically oppressed groups, such as The Rebecca Rioters of 19th century Wales, employed cross-dressing and drag performance in their protests. Groups like Ladies In Support of the President (LISP), The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and Men in Hijabs continue this tradition.

NOTE: Can be presented by both authors or solo by either author.

A FEMALE IMPERSONATOR, A LIQUOR LICENSE & EXECUTIVE ORDER 10450

(Requires PowerPoint) Lynne Carter was one of America’s premier female impersonators in the post-war era. Lynne was also the part owner of Club 181 in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District. How a female impersonator was able to get a liquor license during the Lavender Scare & over the objections of San Francisco’s police chief is a fascinating story of perseverance, Executive Order 10450, and the California Supreme Court.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TRANS INCLUSION & EXCLUSION

(No PowerPoint) A review of writing from 1864-2014 demonstrating how others see trans people & how trans people have defended themselves. Includes quotes from diaries, manifestos, fiction, & trans community publications.

LONGER TALK

(40-50 minutes, w/o Q&A.  Sorry I don’t have a more accurate timing.)

DO THE CLOTHES FIT? - Searching for Trans Identity in Archival Images of Crossdressing

(Requires PowerPoint) Not every image of crossdressing is also a transgender image, nor can it be assumed that it’s a statement of an individual’s identity.  This presentation explains the criteria I have developed to judge whether cross-dressing in vintage photographs is an expression of transgender identity or something else entirely.  The talk includes over 80 crossdressing images from Louise Lawrence Transgender Archive in Vallejo.  The most recent photos are about 40 years old, the oldest over 100.

The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot

Compton's Cafeteria Drag Brunch with Mary Vice & Coco Buttah

In 1966, three years before Stonewall, the Tenderloin district of San Francisco became the stage for one of the first acts of organized LGBTQ+ resistance in the United States. The queens and transgender women who gathered at Compton’s Cafeteria weren’t just meeting for a meal—they were building community and finding strength in their shared struggles. When police harassment pushed them too far, they took a stand. Their bravery sparked a riot that changed the course of LGBTQ+ history. This is the story of their resilience, their defiance, and their fight for the right to exist.

Regular Friday and Saturday shows resume on January 16, 2026. PURCHASE TICKETS.

As the calendar prepares to turn over to a new month, Equality California is busier than ever! We've submitted hundreds of your comments to the federal government urging them to preserve healthcare access for transgender youth, continued preparations for our 2026 Midterm Election operations, worked with partners to refine our 2026 Legislative Package, and so much more. And very soon, we'll be launching our official 2026 messaging campaign — so keep an eye on your inbox!

📩 TAKE ACTION: Transgender Youth Deserve Access to Healthcare

The federal government is considering two new regulations that would severely limit access to medically necessary health care for transgender youth nationwide. If these rules are finalized, doctors and hospitals across the country could be forced to stop providing this health care to transgender youth altogether — regardless of whether families use public insurance, private insurance, or pay out of pocket. These proposals are not final, and there is still time to stop them. The federal government is accepting public comments until February 17, 2026. Submit your comments today — totally anonymously through EQCA's portal — along with additional resources and information!

To Marlette and the Fine Folx at Solano Pride Center,

I hope this message finds you well. Please allow me to introduce myself; my name is Lucas Wilson, and I am a researcher at University of Toronto Mississauga with a focus on conversion therapy and white Christian nationalism. In light of the current SCOTUS case concerning conversion therapy, I thought I would reach out to see if you might be interested in collaborating on a virtual program related to conversion therapy and/or my new book about conversion therapy.

My new short-story anthology, entitled Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors' Stories of Conversion Therapy, came out earlier this year. The anthology brings together 17 stories about conversion therapy, written by survivors themselves (including me), with a foreword by NYT-best-selling author Garrard Conley. Having received praise from a number of reviewers, like those at Publishers Weekly, the book gives voice to a number of LGBTQ+-related themes and experiences, especially in/from high-control religious contexts. As we continue to hear about conversion therapy in the news and on social media, it unfortunately remains a relevant subject to talk about and fight against.

So far this year I have offered lectures about conversion therapy and done book talks at a number of organizations (mental health organizations, nonprofits, law firms, universities, etc.) across North America, including the Stonewall National Archives, Museum, & Library. I would love to collaborate with you in some capacity, whether it be a virtual book/author talk or something else. I would love to connect with you and discuss any possible virtual programs in which you might be interested.

I have pasted below a short bio to give you a better idea of my professional background.

Bio: Lucas Wilson is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Toronto Mississauga and was formerly the Justice, Equity, and Transformation Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Calgary. He is the editor of Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors’ Stories of Conversion Therapy. His public-facing writing has appeared in The Advocate, Queerty, LGBTQ Nation, and Religion Dispatches, among other venues. He is currently working on a new edited collection about LGBTQ+ experiences at Christian colleges, universities, seminaries, and divinity schools (under contract with The University of Georgia Press).

If there is anything else I can pass along, please do not hesitate to let me know. I want to thank you kindly for your time and consideration. I very much hope to hear from you!

All the best,

February Health & Wellness Observances

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (February 7th):   National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) is observed annually on February 7th to highlight the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black Americans, who represent 12% of the U.S. population but nearly 40% of new diagnoses. The day promotes education, testing, and treatment, emphasizing the reduction of stigma and increased access to care.

Key Facts & Objectives:

  • Disproportionate Impact: In 2023, Black people accounted for 38% of new HIV diagnoses and 39% of people living with HIV.
  • Target Populations: Young Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are most affected, with 47% of diagnoses in this group occurring among those aged 13–34.
  • The South: The impact is highest in the South, where Black Americans accounted for 51% of new diagnoses in 2022.
  • Prevention & Care: The 2026 observance emphasizes the need for increased uptake of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), as Black people have the lowest PrEP-to-Need Ratio (PnR).
  • Goal: To raise awareness, decrease stigma, and encourage testing, treatment, and community engagement to end HIV/AIDS within Black communities.

How to Participate:

  • Get Tested: Find free or low-cost testing locations using online resources.
  • Educate: Utilize toolkits from AIDSVu and the CDC to share information.
  • Use Hashtags: Engage on social media with #NBHAAD, #StopHIVTogether, and #PACT4HIV.
  • Support: Engage with organizations like the Black AIDS Institute

Week after Valentine’s Day: Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week:  Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week

(ASAW) is an annual event held during the first full week following Valentine’s Day (starting on Sunday) to foster acceptance and raise awareness for people who experience little to no romantic attraction. It highlights aromantic, demiromantic, and grey-romantic identities, challenging the assumption that romantic love is necessary for a fulfilling life, especially immediately after the heavily romanticized Feb. 14th.

Key Aspects of Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week:

  • Purpose: To spread awareness, increase acceptance, and combat the isolation felt by those on the aromantic spectrum.
  • Timing: Always held the first full week after Valentine’s Day.
  • Focus: Represents individuals who may not experience romantic attraction, or experience it differently (e.g., demiromantic, grey-romantic), while acknowledging that aromantics can still have rich, meaningful, and committed non-romantic relationships (platonic/queerplatonic).
  • History: Originally launched in November 2014 as "Aromantic Awareness Week" and moved to its current, more inclusive, post-Valentine's spot in 2015.
  • Symbolism: The week is often associated with the aromantic pride flag, which features dark green (representing the aromantic spectrum), light green (the arospec spectrum), white (platonic/aesthetic attraction), grey, and black (representing the sexuality spectrum).

HIV Is Not A Crime Awareness Day (HINAC), observed annually on February 28, highlights the urgent need to repeal laws that criminalize people living with HIV based on their status rather than intent or transmission. Founded in 2022 by the Sero Project and The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, it aims to end stigma, misinformation, and legal penalties for HIV-positive individuals.

Key Aspects of the Day:

  • Combating Criminalization: Over 30 U.S. states have laws that criminalize failure to disclose HIV status, or for behaviors with little to no transmission risk, which can lead to incarceration and sex offender registration.
  • Scientific Advancement (U=U): Modern, effective treatment means people with suppressed viral loads cannot transmit the virus, rendering these laws outdated and unscientific.
  • Targeted Demographics: The date specifically addresses the disproportionate impact of both the epidemic and criminalization on Black communities and women.
  • Actionable Advocacy: The day focuses on advocating for legislative reform to align laws with current public health evidence, promoting dignity, and reducing stigma.
