Administrative Holiday Observance - March 19 & 20, 2026
President Trump closed federal offices on Dec. 24 and Dec. 26, 2025, and Governor Moore closed state offices on Dec. 24, 2025. At FSU, these dates had already been designated as holidays (Columbus Day and Veterans Day).
In accordance with applicable memorandums of understanding (AFSCME, FOP), Interim President Smith has designated March 19 and 20, 2026, as the University’s official observance dates for these holidays. FSU will be closed on both days.
Please note that this decision does not establish a precedent for future days off granted by the President of the U.S. and/or by the Governor. Any additional holidays not recognized by the University System of Maryland (USM) will continue to be determine at the discretion of the FSU President.
Employees must have been actively on payroll as of Dec. 24, 2025, in order to receive these administrative holidays. Employees hired after Dec. 24, 2025, will need to use personal leave or annual leave. This applies to all staff employees in Regular status positions (exempt or nonexempt), and Contingent II positions.
If you have any questions regarding your eligibility or leave options, please contact the Office of Human Resources at 301-687-7085.

Dr. Amy Branam Armiento Makes Several "Poe-tober" Appearances
Dr. Amy Branam Armiento, professor of English and immediate past president of the Poe Studies Association, spent much of October and some of November engaged in public-facing humanities featuring Edgar Allan Poe. During Poe's death weekend, Armiento moderated a conversation with David Cook '17 preceding the U.S. premier of Alexina Louie's setting of "The Raven" at Poe Fest International in Baltimore. Cook, a renowned tenor and the festival's guest of honor, was joined by alumna Pateley Bongiorni-Cook '18, conductor, and the Rivers of Harmony string ensemble. Also, Armiento reprised her "Poe: The Master of the Macabre" interactive talk for Profs and Pints at Penn Social in D.C. and The Perch in Baltimore, reaching 230 audience members. On Halloween, she joined Alison Stewart for a short segment on Poe and "The Raven" for WNYC's "All of It." Closer to home, she gave a talk on Poe to the Allegany County Retired School Personnel chapter and accepted English and education intern Emma Cook's '25 invitation to visit Amanda Tiemersma's Mt. Savage Middle School's eighth graders to prepare them for reading "The Tell-Tale Heart." In January, Armiento appeared on WYPR's Midday during the program's Edgar Allen Poe show as she discussed Poe's 217th birthday and his Baltimore connections with guest host Gabe Ortis.

Alternative Winter Break
FSU’s Department of Student Engagement recently took 16 students and four staff members to New Orleans as part of the annual Alternative Break program. The group spent a full day exploring and learning more about the history and culture of New Orleans before their service learning began. They volunteered at the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA) and with Rebuilding Together – Bayou, a non-profit organization focused on rebuilding homes to ensure individuals and families can remain in their communities. This year, Bobcats worked to restore a home that was damaged in a fire by hanging drywall, scrubbing and painting. At the LASPCA, they cleared outdoor shelters to give animals more space to play; bathed, walked and played with the animals; and cleaned and organized the volunteer break room. According to one returning junior student, “This has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life that allowed me to build lasting relationships and deepen my understanding of what it means to serve others.”

Maryland's Future is Here Campaign Begins
The University System of Maryland recently launched the Maryland’s Future Is Here campaign, which will coincide with the Maryland Legislative Session. The campaign features videos of USM students sharing in their own words why they chose a Maryland public university and how they hope to shape the state’s future. Each week throughout the session, USM's Communications Office will share these videos on their social media channels with the goal of reminding legislators who we serve and the future contributions our students will make. The campaign features nearly 40 students from every part of the state, and from every system university and regional higher education center. When you see stories about FSU students, be sure to like and share the videos using the hashtag #MarylandsFuture to ensure maximum engagement, exposure and impact!

Microsoft Sensitivity Labels for Faculty and Emeriti
The Office of Information Technology will be rolling out Microsoft Sensitivity Labels for all faculty and emeriti accounts on Feb. 9. These labels help protect and classify sensitive information, allowing us to:
- Identify and safeguard confidential data such as financial records, student information, and internal documents.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and university policies.
- Prevent accidental sharing of sensitive content outside of approved channels.
As online collaboration and use of artificial intelligence tools grow, protecting information is more critical than ever. Sensitivity labels give us an easy, consistent way to apply security and compliance controls directly within Microsoft 365 apps like Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams. In advance of sensitivity labels being enabled for faculty and emeriti accounts, OIT has made self-paced training available.
Access Training Resources through Canvas.
Next Steps
- Review the training recordings at your convenience.
-
Join our optional live Q&A sessions during the week of Feb. 2 to ask questions and share feedback (invites will be sent in a follow up email).
Sensitivity labels will strengthen our data protection efforts and help keep university data secure. Your participation makes a big difference in safeguarding FSU.
