Expedite Transfer Of Hart Island To Parks & Recreations & Provide Financial Support For Burials And Cremations
 
As the City deals with the devastating number of deaths associated with COVID-19, we need to expedite the transfer of Hart Island to the Department of Parks & Recreations. We need to provide Hart Island with the resources and the support Parks will be able to bring. Hart Island is still under the jurisdiction of the Department of Corrections until early June when Parks will officially have control over the Island.
 
On January 5th, with the support of Melinda Hunt of the Hart Island Project, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Speaker Corey Johnson, former Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito, colleagues and advocates, we were able to transfer the jurisdiction of Hart Island from the Department of Corrections to the Department of Parks & Recreations. In doing so, we restored dignity and respect to the over 1 million people who lay to rest in the largest public cemetery in the Nation. I am calling on the City to expedite this process in order for the Parks and Recreations Department to start preparing for a possible increase in Hart Island burials.
 
The City is facing a challenge the likes of which have not been seen in modern-day history; hundreds of people are dying each day because of the Novel Coronavirus. We need to set up proper proceedings for burials and cremations without severely affecting already financially burdened New Yorkers. I am calling on the State to increase its financial assistance for families who have lost a loved one to COVID-19 and cannot afford the costs of burial or cremation proceedings. This is the least we could be doing for New Yorkers who have fallen victim to the Novel Coronavirus.

Agilizar El Traspaso De Hart Island Al Departamento De Parques Y Recreaciones Y Brindar Mayor Apoyo Financiero Para Entierros Y Cremaciones 

A medida que la Ciudad se ocupa de la devastadora cantidad de muertes asociadas con COVID-19, necesitamos acelerar el traspaso de Hart Island al Departamento de Parques y Recreaciones. Necesitamos proporcionar a Hart Island los recursos y el apoyo que el Departamento de Parques podrá brindar. A la fecha, Hart Island todavía está bajo la jurisdicción del Departamento de Correcciones hasta principios del mes de junio, cuando Parks oficialmente tendrá control sobre la isla.
El 5 de enero, con el apoyo de Melinda Hunt del Proyecto Hart Island, el alcalde Bill de Blasio, el Presidente del Concejo Corey Johnson, colegas y defensores, pudimos traspasar la jurisdicción de Hart Island del Departamento de Correcciones al Departamento de Parques. Al hacerlo, restauramos la dignidad y el respeto a más de 1 millón de personas que descansan en el cementerio público más grande de la nación. Pido a la Ciudad que acelere este proceso para que el Departamento de Parques y Recreaciones comience a prepararse para un posible aumento de los entierros de Hart Island.
La ciudad enfrenta un desafío nunca visto en la historia contemporanea: cientos de personas mueren cada día debido al nuevo coronavirus. Necesitamos establecer procedimientos adecuados para entierros y cremaciones sin agravar la condiciones financieras de neoyorquinos que ya están agobiados frente a la crisis. Pido al Estado que aumente su asistencia financiera para las familias que han perdido a un ser querido a causa de COVID-19 y no pueden pagar los costos de los procedimientos de entierro o cremación. Esto es lo menos que podríamos estar haciendo por los neoyorquinos que han sido víctimas del nuevo coronavirus.
