One of the most important decisions a President makes is the nomination of a Supreme Court justice who will sit on the nation’s highest court for life. That justice will offer opinions and rule on cases that impact every aspect of our lives.
President Joe Biden’s decision today to nominate Judge Kentanji Brown Jackson is not only a historic move, but an opportunity to place on the bench a judge who has unimpeachable character and unwavering dedication to the rule of law.
With so many of our rights hanging in the balance, this decision takes on even greater significance and consequences.
Judge Jackson has served on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. President Biden selected her as one of his first judicial nominees to the U.S. Court of Appeals. If confirmed, she would be the first former federal public defender to serve on the Supreme Court.
When Judge Jackson was in preschool, her father attended law school. She said her love of the law began back when she would sit next to her father in their apartment as he tackled his law school homework—reading cases and preparing for Socratic questioning—while she undertook her preschool homework—coloring books.
Judge Jackson has been confirmed by the Senate on a bipartisan basis three times, including last year for her current seat. We hope that the Senate will do its job with that same bipartisan spirit.
