To our ECS community —
ECS stands in solidarity with women everywhere who seek safe access to healthcare, and we are committed to the fight for reproductive justice. We are horrified by today’s Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending nearly a half a century of jurisprudence on the privacy and bodily autonomy of women. Bodily autonomy, including the right to determine if and when to have children and whether to carry a pregnancy to term, is a basic human right.
We recognize that as Californians, we are privileged to live in a state that guarantees strong legal protections for the fundamental rights of women and has enshrined into state law the principles of Roe. However, the Dobbs decision will have dangerous impacts on the health and safety of women across the country. Today's decision will fall hardest on poor women and women of color, exacerbating inequities these communities already face when it comes to accessing health care.
Undermining the progress of civil protections that so many have fought for over the last half-century, this decision is a step backwards in the fight for equality. Women’s right to full healthcare and bodily autonomy is non-negotiable, and we will not stand idly by as women across America are stripped of their fundamental rights. If you or someone you know is seeking access to healthcare or an abortion, please visit Planned Parenthood for resources that can help.
In Solidarity,
Beth Stokes
