Los Angeles, September 20, 2018 –
ALADS President Ron Hernandez issued the following statement following a deputy involved shooting on Wednesday, September 19, 2018:
ALADS extends its full support and wishes a swift recovery to the two deputies who sustained gunshot wounds at Ruben F. Salazar Park after responding to an assault call on Wednesday evening. The night’s events are another reminder of the incredible risk that our members take every day to protect the citizens of Los Angeles County. We are doing everything in our power to support our wounded deputies and their families.
While details of the shooting are still being confirmed, we have concerns that staffing vacancies and personnel management may have complicated the situation. ALADS has long been vocal about understaffing in the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, and remains committed to addressing the current shortage of 1,500 plus deputy sheriffs.
Ron Hernandez is the president of the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs (ALADS). ALADS is the collective bargaining agent representing more than 7,800 deputy sheriffs and district attorney investigators working in Los Angeles County.
