NYTWA STATEMENT ON OUTGOING MAYOR ADAMS LAST-MINUTE VETO OF INTRO 276, JUST CAUSE FOR NYC UBER AND LYFT DRIVERS

NYTWA Executive Director Bhairavi Desai released the following statement:

Eric Adams spent his final hours as Mayor vetoing protections for workers, including Intro 276, the strongest protections in the nation against unfair firings by Uber and Lyft. Without these protections, drivers are given no notice, independent appeal, or just cause reasoning for deactivations - while left in debt, often with over $80K in car loans and $6K per year for car insurance.

The New York City Council passed Intro 276 with a super majority of 40 votes.

What a sad legacy for outgoing Mayor Adams, and what a betrayal of the working class that put him in office. Meanwhile, our march to justice remains unfettered.

We look forward to working with Shekar Krishnan, incoming Council Speaker Julie Menin and the rest of the City Council to uphold the will of the 78% of council members who voted in favor of passing Intro 276.

Mayor Adam’s last stand to steal protections from workers can’t dampen our hope for a better New York City under the leadership of Zohran Mamdani — who will be our new mayor in just a matter of hours — and his pro-worker appointees, including Julie Su.

About the New York Taxi Workers Alliance

Founded in 1998, the New York Taxi Workers Alliance (NYTWA) is the over 28,000-member strong union of NYC taxicab drivers, representing yellow cab drivers, green car, and black car drivers, including drivers for Uber and Lyft. We fight for justice, rights, respect and dignity for the over 150,000 licensed men and women who often labor 12 hour shifts with little pay and few protections in the city's mobile sweatshop. Our members come from every community, garage, and neighborhood. To find out more visit NYTWA.org, follow us on twitter.com/nytwa or like us on facebook.com/nytwa.
