(Brooklyn, NY) -- Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, who is the first Black woman appointed to her role, and the first Black woman to chair any political party in New York City, issued the following statement:
"Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was sworn in today, a monumental point in our history as the first Black female Supreme Court Justice. Finally, Black women, mothers, daughters and sisters alike, can, at last, see themselves in the Supreme Court. I’m certain this Justice will bring a sense of stability and fairness for all Americans, regardless of who they are, where they are from, or the color of their skin.
As for the accusations against a former public defender being soft on crime, as Senator Dick Durbin said:
“Would law enforcement officials and organizations — including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, and the Fraternal Order of Police — have endorsed your nomination if you were soft on crime? Of course not.”
This is a badly needed light of hope for our nation, especially after the deplorable decisions we have endured from the Supreme Court recently. This has been a long time coming, and while there is still a long way to go, we continue our journey with hearts filled with hope."
