Statement on Potential Teamsters Labor Action from Lt. Governor Sabina Matos

Lt. Governor offers message of solidarity to regional grocery workers

PROVIDENCE, RI — Earlier today, Teamsters Local 25 in Boston announced that they would take action, including picketing Stop & Shop stores in Rhode Island, unless a contract is reached with workers at Ahold-Delhaize's Freetown, Massachusetts distribution center whose health care is being threatened.

Labor action against Stop & Shop could have an immediate and significant effect on the retail grocery market in Rhode Island, where Stop & Shop controls as much as 40% of the market share. Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos today offered the following statement in response to this news:

“The workers who do the actual labor of feeding our communities deserve their fair share of the enormous profits reaped by international chains. I stand with workers in Rhode Island and across the region in encouraging Ahold-Delhaize to return to the bargaining table and find an amicable solution that protects workers' health care.

Too often, giant grocery corporations use their size to unfairly squeeze workers, consumers, and communities alike. These corporations should prioritize the dignity of their employees over the dividends of their shareholders."
