Members of the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago (CEAS) are aware that people, including a former student of the University of Chicago, have recently been detained in China due to their participation in peaceful protests where people held blank sheets of paper to express dissent to the government’s Zero Covid policy.
The detained University of Chicago alumna is Qin Ziyi 秦梓奕. She graduated from the Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences in 2017 with a concentration in Sociology.
We express our deep concern for the well-being of Qin Ziyi and all those who have been detained and hope they will speedily be released. We welcome students and colleagues to reach out to CEAS or to faculty individually with ideas on how to best to respond to this emergency.
In the coming weeks, CEAS plans to conduct various on-campus, academic events to further examine the Blank Paper Movement, its aftermath, and the broader domestic and global implications.
Please visit the CEAS events page for further program updates.
