Statement on Supreme Court Overturning Roe v. Wade

Monterey County - The majority of the United States Supreme Court has overturned the precedent set by Roe v. Wade more than 50 years ago, which enshrined the constitutional right to an abortion. The ruling of the Supreme Court has stripped the rights of millions of Americans to make deeply personal medical decisions about their own bodies and futures. 

“At a time when we should be focused on expanding equity for all working people, particularly for marginalized communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, this ruling will only deepen racial and economic disparities. The burden of this decision will undoubtedly fall on low-income women and gender-oppressed people, and no one should be forced into financial insecurity because they have been denied reproductive health care.” - AFL-CIO

Abortion is still legal in many states across the country. However, anti-abortion groups will continue to push for a federal abortion ban, which is their ultimate goal. This reality underscores the urgency of the moment – As a labor community in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties, we urge State leaders to pass state legislation, amend the California Constitution and set aside funding, so that no matter your zip code or income, you have full access to abortion and reproductive care.

We stand in Solidarity with California Governor Gavin Newsom who started the process through this year’s state budget to continue to show that the state of California should continue to be a beacon of choice for people seeking abortions from states where extremists have managed to ban abortion care.
