More than anything, Sarah’s leadership was rooted in and guided by love—love of her family, her colleagues and Board, her communities, and our beautiful state. In response to the current political moment, Sarah recently wrote that our work in 2026 “will be rooted in and seek to convey connection, love, and building together in community. Our work will be an invitation to our community to join us, emphasizing that we all have a role in the movement and all belong to this ecosystem.” Sarah was the heart and the hearth of our organization. She was a bridge, moving with ease, grace, and integrity between finance meetings, donor conversations, ceremonies with staff, and on both the stage and the streets at marches and protests.
Ensuring that our organization remains strong is one of the most meaningful ways to honor Sarah’s deep commitment and decades long work for gender and social justice in New Mexico. The NewMexicoWomen.Org Board of Directors is working very closely with the staff, funders, and partners to ensure the important work continues and staff are supported. We will communicate more in the near future. To read the full obituary about Sarah’s wonderful life and family, please click here.
Contributions in Sarah’s memory may be made to the "Nico and Sadie Spangenburg Trust" via www.nicoandsadie.com or by contacting Peter Ghiorse at NicoSadie55@gmail.com.
In times of transition and turmoil, Sarah’s orientation was to move closer to one another. We ask that you hold each other and our collective work close, with care and in community.
