Sunspot Provides Solar Experiment Kits to Science Museum

LAS CRUCES, NM - To help encourage area students to better understand solar energy's potential, locally owned Sunspot Solar Energy donated solar experiment kits to the Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science and the Friends of Las Cruces Museums. The kits, which were presented at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, contain tools and equipment including solar cells, multimeters, motors, lights and buzzers.

Sunspot owners Janet and Mellow Honek were excited to present the solar experiment kits to the Friends of Las Cruces Museum. "The Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science is a fantastic environment for kids to learn about the world around them, and it's important to let them learn through hands-on experience," said Janet Honek. "By understanding the science behind the technology, our students will be in a great position to lead in growing global-technology sectors such as renewable energy."

The museum received five leXsolar - PV Ready-to-go experiment systems that include all necessary equipment for student experiments that can show the basic properties of solar energy, including IV characteristics and temperature dependency of solar cells. These systems are designed for students age ten and up, but for the younger museum patrons, Sunspot will also be donating six leXsolar SunSticks, which lets children age five and up learn about solar energy to power motors and lights.

Sunspot Owner Mellow Honek is proud of his company's involvement in the community. "The Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science is a wonderful asset for our community, and we're honored to be able to make it an even more educational, enjoyable experience for the kids."

Archbishop Michael Sheehan of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe was the honored guest for the groundbreaking of the St. Therese Catholic School 34kW solar array on May 21.

Shortly after speaking about the benefits

of solar, including the school saving nearly $10,000 a year in energy costs, Archbishop Sheehan donned the Consolidated Solar Technologies hard hat and grabbed a shovel to wrap up the ceremony in front of more than 100 students, faculty and community members.

Once the project is completed by Consolidated Solar Technologies, the school will be the first solar-powered Catholic School in the Southwest. More importantly, St. Therese will reduce its energy costs by more than 75 percent.

"This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about sustainability and good stewardship, the primary goals of this project," St. Therese Principal Donna Illerbrun said. "It also obviously makes great financial sense."

The school recently completed a Green-A-Thon to educate its students on solar energy and environmental awareness.

"We have helped several schools in New Mexico go solar," Patricia Mattioli, a solar specialist at Consolidated Solar Technologies, said. "It's an honor to help St. Therese reach its energy-saving goals."

Want to know more about the New Mexico Green Chamber's Educational arm, the Partnership for Responsible Business?

Check out their website!

Dear Green Chamber Members and Friends,

I'm honored to have been selected as the CEO for the New Mexico Green Chamber of Commerce. My background and experience as an attorney, an advocate and a professional will hopefully bring stability and growth to our organization at a time of transition.

Last month, I traveled to Washington, DC with Southwest Chapter Vice President and state Board Member Gordon West. We met with New Mexico's Senators and other members of the Obama Administration. We joined CEOs and entrepreneurs from several western states to discuss the economic benefits to small businesses of protecting public lands and open spaces that are a crucial part of the American West. Our meetings with White House and Department of Interior staff went very well, and the NM Green Chamber continuously came up as a great model for promoting the triple bottom line. We will follow up with our Congressional delegation as various bills on energy and conservation come up, and we continue to support the creation of other monuments in New Mexico, such as the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks area.

Gordon and Laura in DC
Gordon West, NMGCC Board Member, and CEO Laura E. Sanchez in Washington D.C.

June is America's Great Outdoors month! As such, the staff encourages you to take advantage of New Mexico's great outdoors. This past Saturday (June 1) was also National Trails Day and as part of America's Great Outdoors month, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell announced the designation of an additional 650 miles to the National Trail System. Among the additions was the Sierra Vista Trail in southern New Mexico. Built by the Bureau of Land Management, this trail provides for mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian use in a 29-mile trail that runs the length of the west side of the Organ Mountains near Las Cruces. The trail has spectacular views of the mountains and provides a relatively easy way to explore the Chihuahuan Desert. So get out there and explore our beautiful desert!

In other GCC news, congratulations goes out to Positive Energy Solar on recently becoming only the second NMGCC member to be a certified B-corp. Positive Energy Solar has been a statewide sponsor of the NMGCC for the past few years and is a model company in our community. We applaud Positive Energy Solar and their hard-working team for all their efforts!

We will have a busy summer as we prepare for our Board of Directors retreat in late June, to be held along with the Board retreat for our sister organization, the Partnership for Responsible Business. We are excited to get both boards together for a discussion on our common ground. We also have two upcoming events in August, one is a renewable energy investment conference co-hosted by Senator Tom Udall's Office. This conference will be held in Santa Fe on August 11-12, details to follow shortly. The second event is the 2nd Annual Sustainable Business Summit which will be in Albuquerque on August 29th. This event is co-hosted by the Albuquerque Business First publication (formerly New Mexico Business Weekly) and will be a half day with an awards luncheon at the Crown Plaza Hotel. Details on this event and business expo opportunities will be rolling out shortly.

In next steps for the Green Chamber, the staff will be working on increasing paid memberships throughout the summer and will refocus our efforts on delivering membership benefits. Please do not be shy about emailing me if you have any ideas for membership benefits that we could be delivering to you.

Kind Regards,

Laura E. Sanchez

Co-op Power: How the Collective Power of People Can Power Your Business

Our guest speaker in May was Robin Seydel who has worked on building the alternative economic system at La Montanita, a coop owned by 16,000 (yeah, that's right!) New Mexican households; with stores in Santa Fe, Gallup and Albuquerque.

The Cooperative business model of community ownership provides an astounding opportunity to build both community and the economy. Its very nature creates growth of local systems, supports non-profit community based organizations, and provides a potent vehicle for building the local economy.  Over 40 people turned out to hear Robin speak about this business model.
