Holiday Cheer at The Baltimore Station

The best way to spread holiday cheer is singing loud for all to hear! At The Baltimore Station we welcomed the holiday season with big smiles, festive decorations, incredible food and of course, all kinds of sing-alongs! Clients worked together to deck the halls all around our facility, putting up three bright and colorful Christmas trees along with a Menorah and signs welcoming Kwanza. December is a great time for our clients to not only learn about different holidays but to share favorite memories of growing up and celebrating them. One client recalled singing Silent Night as his family placed the delicate strands of tinsel on the tree each year.

We welcomed Dan and Claudia Zanes from Our Joyful Noise Baltimore to lead clients and staff in a sing-along of holiday classics along with popular songs from places like Puerto Rico and Argentina. We even lined up together to act out each gift in The 12 Days of Christmas. We performed the whole song, laughing all the way.

We also welcomed back The Baltimore Hons, who came out in festive sweaters to sing carols and jingle bells as they passed out a bag of homemade cookies for each client. This year, they brought a special guest, Baltimore’s very own, David DeBoy, to sing his holiday classic, Crabs for Christmas. The Hons always lift our spirits and remind us of the caring community we have right here in Baltimore.

The holidays can be a challenging time for those struggling with homelessness, addiction, and other mental health issues so we do our best to bring in the warmth and good feelings that are associated with this season. We come together to celebrate, highlighting the good and enjoying shared moments of joy.

Thank You and Happy Holidays from The Baltimore Station

Our mission here at The Baltimore Station is to turn lives around. We offer a safe space for clients to become self-sufficient through working on goals, developing critical life skills, and receiving a variety of therapies. We could not do it without our community though. This year proved that even when tragedy strikes, you can always lean on your community to help you build back. This year we have opened our doors to a record number of volunteers, have been blessed with so many donations, and welcomed new supporters passionate about our cause. There is so much to be thankful for this holiday season and our community is certainly at the top of that list.

To all of our volunteers, THANK YOU for the hours and pieces of yourself you have given to the men of The Baltimore Station. Volunteering at The Baltimore Station means not only filling a much-needed role, but connecting with the men we serve and letting them know that you may be strangers today, but you are also a support to them. You bring the love of a community into the community of The Baltimore Station.

To our donors, THANK YOU for the critical funds to help us support these men as they work to better themselves and prepare for their futures. We were able to provide trips outside of the city, more than seven different therapeutic activities, nutritious meals, and so much more as a result of your generosity. From GivingTuesday, private fundraisers, a kitchen dedication, and so much more, we continue to provide care to veterans in need, because of your support.

To our network of supporters, THANK YOU for trusting in us and supporting The Baltimore Station through challenging and uncertain times. The work we do is not easy but from letters of support to working directly with us to better this organization, we truly appreciate all of those who have stepped up to make a difference alongside our staff at The Baltimore Station.

Sending all the thanks and warm holiday wishes as we wrap up 2023 and look forward to great things in the new year!

The Importance of a New Year's Resolution

"The best time to start was yesterday. The next best time is now."

Although we can always change our habits to do better, the promise of a new year has always given the mindset of a coveted “reset button.” The chance to wipe away mistakes or missed opportunities and focus on what you can do to better your future. With 2024 just on the horizon, there is no better time to plan out a way to improve our quality of life. We have all heard the phrase, “new year, new me,” but how do we make those aspirations come to fruition, how do we stick to our new year’s resolutions?

Some like to focus on eating healthier, while others are looking to spend more time connecting with friends and loved ones. Whatever your New Year’s resolutions, here are some strategies to achieve them or at least stay on track:

  • Be specific in your goals: Instead of just a broad statement like spending more time with family, give it a fixed number like host at least two game nights with the kids each month.
  • Tell others: Even just speaking your resolutions out loud can help you better stick to them, but telling others means including them to help keep you accountable.
  • Focus on setting goals to accomplish something rather than avoid something else.
  • Put time into planning: Set aside time to not only plan out strategies to accomplish your goals, but also consider what tactics you will use when you're faced with challenges.

Here at The Baltimore Station, our goal next year is to get more people involved than ever before. We will offer more individual monthly volunteer opportunities, attend more outreach events, expand our outreach efforts so we can get more homeless veterans into treatment and continue to offer the highest level of care for our clients. We have some hard work ahead; be we are looking forward to the challenge!

Be sure to keep an eye on our January newsletter to see some of our clients personal New Years resolutions.
