June is Men's Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about preventable health issues and encouraging the early detection and treatment of diseases that affect men. Throughout the month, The Baltimore Station has had many opportunities to help clients focus on their overall health and well-being. From mental health to physical wellness, our clinical schedule has been filled with valuable classes and community outings designed to support healthy lifestyles.
One of our favorite mental health activities is our weekly therapeutic drumming class. Master drummer and music therapist Jason Armstrong Baker, BA, LPMT, MT-BC, leads clients in a one-hour drumming circle that allows participants to connect with one another and with themselves through rhythmic exploration. The best part Is there is no experience required. Participants are encouraged to experiment, have fun, and play what feels right. We have been working with Jason for years and continue to appreciate the way he helps some of our most reserved clients come out of their shells while experiencing the healing power of music and community.
We also had a unique opportunity to focus on nutritional health through a guided tour of a local Giant grocery store. During the tour, clients learned practical strategies for identifying healthy food options that fit within a budget. Nutritionist Renee Afryka, MS, RDN, LDN, guided a small group of clients who were nearing graduation from our program, helping them build the confidence to make healthy choices while grocery shopping independently. This experience not only supported nutritional wellness but also provided participants with valuable life skills. While not every client in our program needs assistance with grocery shopping, the knowledge gained was incredibly beneficial for those who did.
Finally, we had the opportunity to learn about staying healthy in the summer heat. Dr. Lauren Missner of Johns Hopkins joined us with an educational session on heat-related health and safety. Clients learned about the importance of sun protection, staying hydrated, and recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion. The timing could not have been better as we head into the hottest months of the year.
A huge thank you goes out to all of the volunteers and longtime supporters who generously share their time, expertise, and knowledge to help improve the health and well-being of the veterans we serve every day. As Men's Health Month continues, we encourage everyone to take time to focus on their own health. Whether it's exercising, spending time outdoors, connecting with others, or learning something new, every step toward better health matters.
So, what is your favorite way to prioritize your health?
