Silent Auction... Get Your Bids in Now!

Our silent auction is in full swing! Throughout this week, we're auctioning off fantastic sports memorabilia, exciting experiences, and one truly luxurious getaway. Drumroll, please... to Riviera Maya!

We have been thrilled to hear all the buzz surrounding these incredible packages and to see the excitement building as bidders compete to take them home. Even more exciting is knowing that every bid helps support much-needed improvements to our facility.

Over the years, our community has consistently stepped up whenever we've had a need. Through fundraisers, volunteer efforts, private donations, and corporate sponsorships, your support has helped us continue serving veterans in need. Today, we're asking for your help once again.

The Baltimore Station is working to raise $10,000 for critical facility improvement projects, including security upgrades, elevator repairs, and kitchen modifications. These updates will help us continue providing a safe, supportive environment where our clients can focus on achieving their long-term goals and building brighter futures.

We encourage you to visit our Bid to Build Hope silent auction website and support our mission. Every bid you place not only helps fund these important improvements but also enters you for a chance to win an Amazon gift card. So even if you don't walk away with your favorite item, you could still end up with a fun surprise!

Thank you for helping us build hope, strengthen our facility, and support the veterans we serve.

BBQ Season is Here

Summer has only just begun, but cookout season is already in full swing at The Baltimore Station. It’s been a banner month for volunteer meals and events, beginning with a surprise visit from Pit & Pendulum BBQ owner and pitmaster Daniel Hatfield dropped by in early June with a half dozen enormous slabs of beef and pork still sizzling from the smoker. We also welcomed Exelon Military Actively Connected (EMAC) and BGE who fired up our charcoal grills and paired the meal with their award-winning chili, delicious sides, and many laughs.

100-degree heat index was no sweat for Back on My Feet who served a great spread of burgers, dogs and their trademark array of amazing desserts. Our M&T Bank volunteers served up some amazing BBQ chicken of their own, along with conducting a financial literacy class for our clients. Not just one but three groups of Loyola Blakefield students visited The Station during their week of service. They joined in our weekly therapeutic drumming and drama classes alongside our clients and had a blast.

“I haven’t laughed this much in years,” said one client after an improv skit with two students.

As summer break starts, we welcome the first of our summer service groups from churches near and far. St. Barnabas and St. Susanna (SBSS) Church, located only a few blocks from The Station, brought in visitors from a church in central Pennsylvania to serve up a delicious spread for both lunch and dinner. We are always excited to welcome back this group with volunteers both local and from out of state!

We were even able to add some fun activities in with a Saturday bingo double header hosted by Sigma Chi Psi sorority and Union Church of Baltimore County, followed by an evening of spades (and amazing food) with WeWins. Our Joyful Noise Baltimore capped it off with a jazz concert on June 15.

Thank you so much to all of our amazing volunteers. You make a difference in the lives of our veterans every day! To get involved, contact Volunteer Coordinator Pete Crispino at pcrispino@baltimorestation.org or 410-752-4454 x 113.

Men's Health Month

June is Men's Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about preventable health issues and encouraging the early detection and treatment of diseases that affect men. Throughout the month, The Baltimore Station has had many opportunities to help clients focus on their overall health and well-being. From mental health to physical wellness, our clinical schedule has been filled with valuable classes and community outings designed to support healthy lifestyles.

One of our favorite mental health activities is our weekly therapeutic drumming class. Master drummer and music therapist Jason Armstrong Baker, BA, LPMT, MT-BC, leads clients in a one-hour drumming circle that allows participants to connect with one another and with themselves through rhythmic exploration. The best part Is there is no experience required. Participants are encouraged to experiment, have fun, and play what feels right. We have been working with Jason for years and continue to appreciate the way he helps some of our most reserved clients come out of their shells while experiencing the healing power of music and community.

We also had a unique opportunity to focus on nutritional health through a guided tour of a local Giant grocery store. During the tour, clients learned practical strategies for identifying healthy food options that fit within a budget. Nutritionist Renee Afryka, MS, RDN, LDN, guided a small group of clients who were nearing graduation from our program, helping them build the confidence to make healthy choices while grocery shopping independently. This experience not only supported nutritional wellness but also provided participants with valuable life skills. While not every client in our program needs assistance with grocery shopping, the knowledge gained was incredibly beneficial for those who did.

Finally, we had the opportunity to learn about staying healthy in the summer heat. Dr. Lauren Missner of Johns Hopkins joined us with an educational session on heat-related health and safety. Clients learned about the importance of sun protection, staying hydrated, and recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion. The timing could not have been better as we head into the hottest months of the year.

A huge thank you goes out to all of the volunteers and longtime supporters who generously share their time, expertise, and knowledge to help improve the health and well-being of the veterans we serve every day. As Men's Health Month continues, we encourage everyone to take time to focus on their own health. Whether it's exercising, spending time outdoors, connecting with others, or learning something new, every step toward better health matters.

So, what is your favorite way to prioritize your health?
