Let's Go Ravens!

With all the excitement from watching the O’s win game after game, football season has really snuck up on us! As a proud Baltimore organization right around the corner from M&T Bank Stadium, you can bet we have plenty of Ravens fans cheering on the team through season highs and lows. This summer we were fortunate enough to be invited to the Raven’s training camp so clients could get a sneak peek at how their favorite team is looking and even meet some of the players!

We loaded up a van full of Baltimore Station veterans and headed out to Owings Mills for a day of fun, chatting with the new and returning Ravens, as well as getting some autographs. One client said “I’m just so grateful for the opportunity to go. It was a lot of fun talking with the team and seeing all the people who came out to show Baltimore Ravens pride.” What a great way to get everyone eager for football season!

We are also grateful to be included in the Raven’s Caw to Action community volunteer day. Caw to Action is an annual day of service designed to encourage fans to volunteer while promoting local non-profit organizations. The Baltimore Station, along with more than 50 other non-profits, welcomed Ravens fans to get involved in supporting the community, starting off the season right! A huge thank you to all the volunteers who came out to move and organize donations, helping us get ready for a winter of supporting those in need. Thank you to The Baltimore Ravens and The United Way for organizing those looking to give back, year after year.

A reminder that The Baltimore Station is closed to all volunteers and drop-off donations on Ravens home game days. Stay safe and LET’S GO RAVENS!

A Special Thank You to Cheese Galore and More

As we move forward with our mission of supporting homeless veterans, it has been both a challenge and adjustment without our leader, John Friedel. But we are reminded every day of his impact and the value of the work we have all done through the ongoing support from our community. A special thank you to Cheese Galore and More and former board member and longtime supporter Frieda Ulman for hosting a “Celebration of Life” for John. The event not only raised critical funds for our organization, but it also gave those who love The Baltimore Station and John an opportunity to mourn a loss together. We have always loved our SOBO community, and we thank you for your continued years of support.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out with messages of love and support. It is in trying times that we see the strength and spirit of the Baltimore community shine through.

Welcome Back to School

As September comes to an end and we look forward to the fall, we are delighted to welcome back all our student groups we have waited all summer to see! Although we stayed busy with new volunteers, returning groups, and community outings, we always miss the unique energy brought by students who are so excited to give back through volunteering. We were thrilled to host our first student organization back from Johns Hopkins University, Alpha Phi Omega, to work alongside our kitchen team in cooking a meal for our clients. Students cook in our kitchen, organize donation drives, and help at some of our events, providing much needed support in our humble firehouse station. We look forward to seeing plenty more students and junior volunteers as the school year gets going!

If you are looking for a way to bring the value of service to your students, please reach out to volunteer coordinator, Lilly Frazier, at lfrazier@baltimroestation.org to get information on volunteering with The Baltimore Station!

September is National Service Dog Month

National Service Dog Month is a month-long celebration honoring the hard work and life-changing impact service dogs have on people with disabilities every day. We also celebrate therapy dogs for their dedication and ability to bring positive energy to those suffering with anxiety or depression, or those who need the comfort of a furry friend. We are so fortunate to partner with Fidos for Freedom as both of our missions align in helping others.

Fidos for Freedom is a Maryland based non-profit whose vision is “to increase the quality of life and provide companionship to the residents of our local community through specially trained service dogs, hearing dogs and therapy dogs.” Fidos has been committed to serving our clients through monthly visits with their specially trained PTSD dogs who come expecting nothing but a pat on the head and a “good dog.” We have met so many precious pups during these service days including Trista whose beautiful coat catches your eye, Zander whose energy lights up the room, and so many more, each with a unique personality of their own. Their human companions have also left a warm feeling in our hearts as they have worked with the community for years learning the stories of those they support and sharing the reasons why being involved with Fidos means so much to them. Thank you, Fidos for Freedom, for all your work helping our clients and others throughout the community.
