From our friends at the City of Temple:
Use Common Sense with Fireworks
With Independence Day quickly approaching, Temple Fire & Rescue reminds residents in Temple that it is illegal to possess, and discharge fireworks inside the city limits. Sparklers are classified as fireworks and are also prohibited.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that in 2015 there were eleven deaths and an estimated 11,900 people who were injured due to fireworks. According to the CPSC, an estimated 8,000 fireworks-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments from June 19-July 19, 2015.
If you decide to discharge fireworks outside the city limits, remember to seek permission from the landowner. The site should be prepared by removing dead vegetation. Common sense and sober adult supervision are critical to safe fireworks.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Temple Fire & Rescue offer the following tips:
- Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
- Sober adults should always supervise fireworks activities.
- Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
- Read and follow all warnings and instructions.
- Be sure people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
- Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials.
- Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
- Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully functioned.
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose for emergencies and for pouring on fireworks that don't fully function.
Miller Park, 1919 North 1st Street in Temple is the location for the HEB All American 4
th of July Family Fun Fest scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Enjoy plenty of family fun, food, live music and a professional fireworks display which begins at 9:30 p.m. Temple Fire & Rescue encourages people to attend a public fireworks display and enjoy a fire-safe, injury-free Fourth of July.

CEFCO Raises $735,000 at their 16th Annual Charity Golf Tournament
CEFCO Convenience Stores and parent company Fikes Wholesale, Inc., announced at its 16th Annual "Hackers-R-Us" Charity Golf Tournament, held on June 19th, 2017, that they will be donating a grand total of $735,000. Of the money raised this year, $510,000 will go to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, and $225,000 to the Fikes Foundation.
"Once again, the grass roots efforts of our store team members, support staff, and supply partners, surpassed our expectations" said Raymond Smith, President of The Fikes Companies. "Our total contribution of $735,000 is truly amazing when compared to the $145,000 raised just a few short years ago, and is humbling when reflecting upon the over $5.5 million raised in total, over the years, for such worthy causes. We are extremely proud of the efforts of all 2,500 team members who worked hard to raise this money.
"James and Kim Fikes, and our entire leadership and support teams from The Fikes Companies (Fikes Wholesale, CEFCO Convenience Stores, Cord Financial Services, Group Petroleum Services, The Fikes Terminals, and JF Air Traffic), are honored to be able to give back to the communities we service. It is inspirational to see how every year our employees have gotten involved in these community causes, and we continue to be extremely proud of these efforts."
"Kim and I wish to thank our Customers, Team Members, and Business Partners who allow us to continue to give back to the communities that we live and work in", said James Fikes, CEO of The Fikes Companies. "Listening to the stories of CMN children and their families, and the assistance CMN hospitals provide for them, really puts things into perspective as to why we work so hard to help those in need. Once again, we want to thank all of the people that help us contribute to these worthy causes."
In 1999, CEFCO began its partnership with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, with $700 raised in stores. CEFCO's 2017 fundraising total marks some exciting milestones for the organization. To date, CEFCO has raised and donated over $5,500,000 to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, and various Fikes Foundation Charitable causes.
