From Phyllis: Spring at HOWA

Spring is a powerful time of transition from winter to summer. This spring I have experienced volatile weather as I have camped along the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. One week was beautiful sunny mid-70 days with nights in the 50’s. The next week was deeply overcast snowy days in the 50’s with temperatures dipping into the 20’s at night. Brrrr! When we experience these spring weather extremes we know that the weather will turn and there will be the glorious months of summer to look forward to.

HOWA is also in a time of powerful transition.  As a couple of staff have resigned, and Suanne and I are now in interim leadership positions, dramatic changes are moving through the organization. Like the spring transition from winter to summer, the changes felt with this reduction in staff feels intense. Yet, we trust, just like the spring transition, that the future will hold much to look forward to.

The amazing HOWA staff continue to be committed to serving the nomad community. During this time, tasks are being shifted, programs are being reviewed and we all are doubling down to get the current work done, while preparing for those glorious months of summer we all look forward to.

The HOWA staff are pulling together to move through this transition time. I am asking all of you to join us in supporting HOWA through your continued donations, volunteering at upcoming events and taking part in those ongoing programs like the Virtual Caravans, the online Bulletin Board and others that will be coming up later in the year.

Nomad Boondocking Skills Camp

The first ever Boondocking Skills Camp is winding down after nearly two weeks of immersion into off-grid living in a vehicle. The participants arrived at a location in northeastern Arizona near the Petrified National Forest ready to take care of their most basic needs while living out of their vehicles. The vehicles ranged from sedans and minivans using tents to expand their living areas to cargo vans, Promasters and Ford Transits.

“What I experienced is that there is a recognition of everyone's experience, an acceptance of everyone for where they are at.”                             ~ Brooke ~

All of the participants had limited experience as nomads. Remarkably, they all had done a considerable amount of planning and preparation for this two-week event. Everyone had a way to cook, store their food and take care of their toileting and hygiene. But even with all their planning and preparation, each participant has gained more know-how and skills as they attended daily presentations and discussions about various aspects of nomad life.

“I have been very impressed with the caliber of the mentors. Their willingness to share is extraordinary.”                                                                     ~ Sandi ~

While the mentors provided solid skills and information to the participants, mother nature offered additional training opportunities by bringing several days of intense winds to challenge those with tents and testing everyone’s endurance. And then she turned down the thermostat bringing nights in the low 20s and large, fluffy snowflakes that accumulated about seven inches all around! It was as if she was playing her part in preparing the participants for life close to nature. Real life, practical experience living up close and personal with the weather put newbies and experienced nomads to the test.

"I am loving the community, the sense of strong bonds, willingness for all to share and help; I have the feeling my soul is being fed."                                  ~ Wanda ~

This was the first Nomad Boondocking Skills Camp held by HOWA. Seven participants came together as strangers and left full of nomad knowledge and friendships. It was a successful event and may lay the foundation for future similar camps.

I expected to learn the basics of nomad living; I was looking forward to community and being accepted. What I experienced is a more in-depth training than I expected. I have experienced my confidence growing.   ~ Wanda ~

Emergency Fund: The unexpected happens to all of us

The HOWA eFund Program is for active nomads in need whose primary residence is their vehicle. Unexpected situations happen leaving us out of control without enough financial, family, or friend resources to fix the emergency.

That is when the HOWA eFund may be able to help.

The HOWA eFund is 100% funded by donations from the nomad community. In 2024, 51 awards were made totaling $28,434.50. What an amazing community that supports other nomads in this way. To learn more about the HOWA eFund or if you would like to contribute to the HOWA eFund to assist active nomads please visit:

Here are a few heartfelt thank you notes received from award recipients:

Thank you for assisting me in this matter......... the vehicle repair will be complete tomorrow. I will call after I test drive the vehicle tomorrow. Again, thank you for assisting me with this issue.

Dear HOWA family,

Thanks so much for the wonderful experience I had with you in getting financial help to fix my minivan. Everything went smoothly and I so appreciated the help. This journey has been full of ups and downs, especially with my vehicle, but this is definitely one of those times that I will remember the kindness and generosity from a wonderful organization. You put a huge smile on my face.

- Sincerely, Margaret

It took me over an hour to gain my composure. This is such a blessing. I'm shocked that the decision has been made already. It's been a long time since I've had tears of joy. I'm honestly still at a loss for words. Thank all of you so much!!
