When You Have Concerns: A Parent’s Guide to Special Education Referrals for Children Ages 3-5

If your child is between the ages of 3 and 5 and you're concerned about their development or learning, early intervention can make all the difference. Explore this new resource created for families, offering key information about special education referrals for young children.

Connecting to Community Supports

If your child has been identified with an intellectual disability or a developmental delay, connecting with your Local Intellectual and Developmental Disability Authority (LIDDA) is an important first step. Your LIDDA can help you learn about services and resources that may be available for your child and family. Use this guide to find the LIDDA that serves your county and learn how to get connected.

UPCOMING EVENT

Understanding Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Dyslexia in Special Education

Join us for a free webinar on April 22, 2026, at 12:15 p.m. (CST). Understanding SLD and Dyslexia in Special Education is designed to help parents better understand how schools identify and support students with learning disabilities. This presentation will explain how parents can request a special education evaluation, what a Specific Learning Disability (SLD) means under special education law, and how dyslexia fits within the SLD category.

Parents will learn what to expect during the evaluation process, who is involved, and how decisions are made about eligibility and services. The session also explains the types of instruction and support that may be provided for students with dyslexia when they qualify for special education.

In addition, this presentation reviews parent rights, including what options are available if a parent disagrees with the results of an evaluation. The goal is to provide clear, accurate information so parents feel informed, supported, and confident in partnering with their child’s school to meet their child’s learning needs. Register here.
