From the Interim Director:
The Gifts of Wonderment and Awe
As I write this, we are more than half-way into June. It is hard to believe that I have been at the ELC for a full year this month. This year, I have come to appreciate the many gifts that you and your children experience each day at the ELC. The gift of teachers who are truly grateful for the opportunity to partner with you in these early years of your child’s development. The gift of a community that celebrates the diversity that each child, family, and staff member brings to the ELC. The gift of time for children to engage in uninterrupted periods of play, to persevere with a task, to engage with each other, and to discover new wonders about how the world works. The gift of sheer joy that children bring to us each day; delight, wonderment, and awe are daily small moments at the ELC.

Some of you will continue at the ELC for most of the summer, while others of you will take some breaks for your own summer holidays. As you plan your summer family time, I wish for you the gift of being in the moment with your child. As Ben Mardell reminds is in this recent article from Usable Knowledge, from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, “Build sandcastles together, dress up together, or tell stories together. Really get into the spirit of play and doing to together. That’s the beauty of summertime or vacation.” You may also find that it is good for your own mindfulness. Children have a way of being in the moment that many of us forget to appreciate. So, in the weeks ahead, I hope you discover the gifts of wonderment and awe through your child’s eyes as you create small moments of play and exploration with them.

Best,
Linda
Health and Safety
The mission of the ELC is to provide quality care for our children and families and in order for us to do this we must first ensure that our children and families are safe from the moment they arrive on the Children's Campus. It has been brought to our attention that many times people entering the parking lot are exceeding the speed limit causing the potential for an incident to occur.

In response to this concern, we have contacted the UD Police and they will be assigning officers to conduct directed patrols for the next few weeks. In addition, the UD police have been approved for a grant for a speed trailer and will set it up in the parking lot as soon as they receive it.

Thank you for your continued partnership in ensuring that everyone who arrives on the Children's Campus is kept safe.

Family Connections

Summertime is another opportunity to turn play into learning. Check out the NAEYC website, "For Families", tab for many resourceful articles.

We are officially in summer mode at the ELC with camp in full swing, field trips, UD pool days and sprinkler and water days for our youngest ELC children. Summer is a great time to take a deep breath and create some space for a little extra family time. We have researched opportunities in our local community that can help you create lasting memories this summer.

  1. From pony rides, to hikes and art classes, check out the New Castle County Parks and Recreation website for great family events.
  2. Visit this link to find some really great ideas that are very budget friendly.
  3. Check out local libraries and museums for even more ideas!
ACTION REQUESTED!
Throughout the summer send pictures of your family having fun. We will share the pictures on the t.v. monitor in the front lobby. You can email your family photos to Kathy Kampe .
