Dear Gary Community School Corporation supporters,

With our high school seniors set to graduate on Sunday, I’m writing to thank you for all of your support during a school year that has been unlike any other.

We started school in August with our buildings closed, our teachers working remotely, and our students learning from home. We’re ending the school year with our buildings open and the majority of our students learning in classrooms directly from their teachers.

In between, our students have won prestigious college scholarships, and our student-athletes made our community proud by winning the Boys Basketball Sectional Championship and going into overtime at the semistate tournament. Thanks to overwhelming support from our community, we also passed a referendum that helped direct the future of our schools, provided support to retain our outstanding teachers, and put our students on a path to receive the same level of services that students in other communities receive.

We couldn’t have done this without you. Thank you for working with us during this historic time. Thank you also to teachers and school staff, labor unions, community partners, clergy leaders, business owners, elected and appointed officials, and so many others who helped us navigate this school year together.

Looking ahead, we’re excited about serving hundreds of students in our free STEM Summer Camp (you can still enroll; call 219-881-5466) and welcoming students back to school in August so we can continue to build on these gains.

Because of your support and partnership, Gary Community School Corporation is on the rise!

Sincerely,

Dr. Paige McNulty
Gary Community School Corporation Manager

The Gary Community School Corporation is now open for enrollment for the 2021-2022 School Year.

New families coming into the district can now enroll online or at the school your scholar will attend. Online instructions can be found here.

For returning families, re-registration will begin July 1, 2021!
Food Services
Since the beginning of the school year, the Gary Community School Corporation’s Food Service department has distributed nearly 80,000 meals to children 18 years and younger.

We want you safe, and we continue to improve our operations just for you.  Since the pandemic, Food Services has ensured that menu items maintain their proper temperatures until they are in your hands.  We only ask that you store food immediately after receiving the food items to ensure food safety.  SodexoMAGIC, our food provider, ensures that all items are pre-packaged to address the safety concerns around COVID-19.

District Officials to Unveil Track Restoration with Public Ceremony
The Gary Community School Corporation is inviting the community to celebrate the recent restoration of the track at West Side Leadership Academy on Tuesday, June 8th at 10:00 a.m.

GCSC Manager Dr. Paige McNulty will be joined the Athletics staff, student-athletes and a host of community stakeholders to officially open the track to the public.
At the conclusion of the brief program, everyone will be invited to take a ceremonious lap around the track.

“We especially want our students and stakeholders to see tangible results of our efforts,” said McNulty. “The restoration of West Side’s track is one of many signs that the District is headed in the right direction.”

The ceremony will also be broadcast live on both the Gary Community School Corporation and West Side Leadership Academy Facebook pages.

1980 Gary West 4x400 Relay
Kenneth Carter, Craig Peterson,
Walter Monagan-Brown, Sortero Burnett

Gary West Side 4x400 relay teams have been dominate since the IHSAA went metric in 1980 and for 41 years they have held the State Finals record of 3:13.66. Only two other teams have broken the 3:15 mark (Center Grove 2011 and Hamilton Southeastern 2013).

Kenneth Carter
Carter started his track career with the Mayor Hatcher Youth Foundation (AAU) during the summer of his 14th year, running the 600 meters. At West Side High School, he ran the 400 meters and 4x400 relay, ultimately being named All-American. His talent led to a full scholarship in track and field to Prairie View A&M. After his collegiate career running in meets hosted by the NAIA, SWAC, Texas Relays and others, Carter now resides in Houston, Texas, enjoying barbecuing.

Craig Peterson
After his stardom career at Gary West High School, Peterson served in the United States Air Force. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland and a Master of Arts degree in Human Science & Counseling from Liberty University.
The foundation of his life is faith and family. The induction into the Indiana Track and Field Hall of Fame is not only a recognition of personal achievement but an embodiment of what his family taught.

Walter Monagan-Brown
After four IHSAA championships (1979 4x22o, 1980 4x400, 1981 400 and 4x400 and a second in the 1980 400), Walter would win the 1981 AAU National Junior Olympic in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 46.93. He was a high school All-American in both his junior and senior years. Walter took his talents to Louisiana Tech University for a year, then to Parkland Junior College and to Texas Southern University. During his collegiate career, he had the honor of running against such athletes as Carl Lewis and Herschel Walker.

Sortero Burnett
Sortero was known for his relay participation. As a sophomore, he ran on the IHSAA state champion 4x220 and a third place 4x440. In 1980, he ran on both the 4x200 and 4x400 championship relays. After graduating, Sortero attended Prairie View A&M University.
