Gary Community School Corporation Kicks off Football Season with dedication of New Turf Field at West Side Leadership Academy

(Gary, IND) – On Friday, August 26th, the Gary Community School Corporation hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony in recognition of the newly installed turf on the football field of West Side Leadership Academy. The Cougar stadium housed a record-breaking crowd filled with staff, students, alumni and community stakeholders cheering the varsity squad as they squared off against Calumet New Tech High School.

Although not victorious on the field, the spirit generated by the mass improvements was enough for Cougar fans. The night of festivities included performances by the marching band, majorettes and cheer leading team.

"I'm told that West Side hasn't seen a football crowd like this in years, and it's exactly what we wanted," said GCSC Manager Dr. McNulty. "We do what we do everyday for the children, and as a school community working together, we can keep this spirit of pride going not just for sports, but for academics and everything else."

The city's only public high school continues to bask in a series of renovations including a re-surfaced track, jumbotron, remodeled press box, upgraded lighting and other cosmetic improvements which were made possible through funds from the referendum passed by voters in November of 2020 and the passage of Bill 1065 authored by State Senator Eddie Melton.

A special moment occurred during the ribbon cutting ceremony when the district payed tribute to all the former high schools of Gary, IN couples with a unity banner featuring all of the logos.

“We shall never forget the shoulders upon which this District stands nor the legendary institutions that placed Gary on the map as nationally recognized standard for academia," said McNulty.

McNulty shared that Gary’s educational past will be honored through a Hall of Fame that will be in the surge area of West Side Leadership Academy. Meanwhile the District remains focused on moving forward in unity under the newly adopted mantra of the "Gary Way," which outlines the role of every stakeholder and challenges everyone to work together in the best interest of children.

Ms. Lattimore’s Class – A lesson about shapes

Glen Park Academy kicked off the year by getting our teachers involved in a STEM/chopped competition.

Each of our groups were given a bin with the same items, but the challenge was to use those items to teach the rest of our groups about one of our schoolwide PBIS routines/procedures. Our staff had a lot of fun and showed great creativity which modeled what we are trying to do as we seek STEM certification this year.

We asked each grade level to create STEM projects in the first few weeks of the school year following a very similar process as the staff did during our training. Each grade level chose one of our PBIS procedures and had their students work in collaborative groups to create a way to present their procedure to the rest of the school because we know we have many new students and families each year that need to learn the “GPA Way”.

This project was perfect for the beginning of the year when we focus on our school-wide expectations and allow the students to really take ownership of them as they have to understand them and be able to present them to others.

We asked each class to present their projects and choose the one that best represented their class. Afterward, the top projects from each grade was to be submitted so we could share those presentations with the entire school.

We have included some artifacts that demonstrate how our students collaborated and created their projects. Our 3rd graders chose Cafeteria procedures, Kg shared about how everyone gets their breakfast and uses manners, and 5th graders created skits and submitted videos of teaching the SLANT procedure.

Schoolwide Focus: Banneker scholars focused on mastering routines, procedures, and protocols. The first two weeks of school were spent intentionally introducing, modeling, and reinforcing school-wide expectations focusing on the core beliefs that Banneker Cougars are Respectful, Responsible, Safe, Compassionate, Agents of Change. Week three’s focus was on Safety protocols. All scholars practiced the fire drill, tornado drill, and lockdown drill with success. Week four is all about Technology. All scholars will understand the importance of technology usage and how to navigate all apps independently.

This past week, we received numerous donations from members of our community and school alumni!

Dr. Melita Pope- Mitchell ( Gary West Side graduate and alumni of Beveridge Elementary) donated pencil grippers to our kindergartners, stem kits, stem books, and safety stem glasses to our students.

Dr. Deborah McCullough and brother Mr. Darryl McCullough were accompanied by other family members from Cleveland, Ohio as they stopped by for a visit and to wish our scholars well. This beautiful school was named after their mother, the late Mrs. Frankie Woods McCullough.

Our Frankie Woods McCullough Academy morning announcers did an outstanding job this week! They provided the student body with not only our morning Pledge but also “Fun Facts” to inspire critical thinking, The Word of the Day” to enhance vocabulary skills, as well as our daily “Uniform Check” to assist the scholars in remembering to be in uniform each day! Our announcers are directed by our fabulous third-grade teacher Mrs. Kendra Weathersby. 🐾 Cougar Paws up🐾!!!

Recently, the Gary Community School Corporation received a large donation of book bags and school supplies from Boeing. The annual “Liftoff for Learning” initiative by Boeing is a nationwide program and 275 students from Williams, Beveridge and Banneker at Marquette Elementary Schools were selected as this year's as recipients. The generous donation came directly from the employees of Boeing.

Please remember that our focus area for the month is: Accountability We are ALL accountable for our actions and how those actions impact others.
