Gary Schools Celebrate Read Across America Day - March 2

The students in grades K-2 in the Gary Community School Corporation participated in the Read Across America program. Thanks to a partnership with the Gary Literacy Coalition, volunteers were assigned classrooms throughout 5 elementary schools where they read the books "The Cat in the Hat" and "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss.

"Read Across America is the perfect way to get young people excited about reading," said Lori Kuykendall, Executive Director of the Gary Literacy Coalition. "We look forward to continuing our literacy programs in the Gary Schools."

GCSC Manager Dr. Paige McNulty was one of the readers.

"This took me back to my days of teaching," said McNulty. "There's nothing like being in the classroom, and I enjoyed every minute of it."

Season 2 has begun! Watch the interview with Dr. Paige McNulty, Manager of the Gary Schools

The West Side Theatre Guild continues its 25th season with the screening of the documentary film,Nationtime, directed by William Greaves.

NATIONTIME is a documentary on the National Black Political Convention held in Gary, Indiana, in 1972, a historic event that gathered Black voices from across the political spectrum, among them Jesse Jackson, Dick Gregory, Coretta Scott King, Dr. Betty Shabazz, Richard Hatcher, Amiri Baraka, Charles Diggs, Isaac Hayes, Richard Roundtree, and H. Carl McCall. Narrated by Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte, the film was considered too militant for television broadcast at the time and has since circulated only in an edited fifty-eight-minute version. This new restoration returns an essential cultural document to its original eighty-minute length and visual quality.

"Jada has a natural gift for the cosmetology industry, which makes her attention to detail

and the theory of Trichology, (the study of hair), heightened. She is requested often, and dedicated to helping her peers learn or perfect their skills. She has been a great help as a

first-year teacher with the Gary Area Career Center. She shows grace where grace is needed and will indeed be a Cosmetologist who will be sought by many!"
