Gary Community School Corporation Fosters Career Exploration among Students Through Visit to County Line Apple Orchard

Recently, the Gary Community School Corporation Gary Area Career Center’s Culinary Arts, Business, Early Childhood Education and Radio/TV students traveled to the County Line Apple Orchard for a multi-tier career exploration experience.

The excursion provided hands-on learning experiences for the students that included picking fresh fruits in anticipation of making apple pies and tarts. The culinary students will be using the apples from the orchard to make special treats while the business students will determine the price point for each dessert through costs analysis. The early childhood education students created field experiences for grades Pre-K through 2, and the Radio/TV students documented the adventure by taking photos and videos.

“This trip was a great experience for all of our students,” said Shelly Martin, Director of the Gary Area Career Center. “The apple orchard presented a great opportunity for them to learn how to explore career opportunities while being introduced to new resources in their community.”

In addition, other schools in the district are making plans to visit the orchard this season. Follow @GarySchools on Facebook for pictures and more!

There will be an immunization clinic at Bethune on Thursday, October 12, 2023. Students need parental consent to be immunized. If you wish to send your child to the clinic, please see the school nurse for the forms.

Please ensure that your child's immunizations are up to date so that there is no interruption to your child's learning journey.

STEM at GPA

🐝 🌱 Our friend and community partner, Freida Graves, from Faith Farms in Gary, came to be our expert guest for our 3rd grade STEM project called “Green Thumb”. Scholars have been learning about plants and gardening. Miss Freida brought items from their local bee hives and taught our 3rd graders the important part bees play in plant growth and how important they are for us as human beings! Frieda even brought us a book about bees for our library!

We are so happy that our students have the opportunity to learn outside of the four walls of their classrooms. Banneker Elementary at Marquette is in an excellent location to learn about Forestry and wildlife. Go Cougars and thank you to Purdue Extension-Lake County 4-H!

September has been another great month of celebrations at Daniel Hale Williams! We celebrated 28 Days of Kindness, College Go Week, and student Birthdays!! Thank you to all the staff and students who participated. A special thank to Officer Minkah for delivering a message to our students about safety, discipline and perseverance!
