Cyber Threats Facing School and School District Networks and Systems According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Defense’s Defense Technical Information Center, some of the most common types of online threats are:

Data Breach. A data breach is a leak or spill of sensitive, protected, or confidential data from a secure to an insecure environment that are then copied, transmitted, viewed, stolen, or used in an unauthorized manner. Data breaches often occur with confidential information, such as students’ records, that may be inappropriately viewed or used by an individual who should not have access to the information.
Spoofing/Phishing. Both spoofing and phishing involve the use of fake electronic documents. Spoofing refers to the dissemination of an email that is forged to appear as though it was sent by someone other than the actual source. Phishing is the act of sending an email falsely claiming to be a legitimate organization in an attempt to deceive the recipient into divulging sensitive information (e.g., passwords, credit card numbers, or bank account information) after directing the user to visit a fake Website. o Spear phishing is a more targeted form of phishing and typically involves sending an email that appears to come from a colleague or acquaintance.
Families and Friends
The West Side Leadership Academy Varsity Football team is holding a fundraiser for new uniforms. The community is invited to contribute through the fundraising site, givebutter.com where 99.5% of the proceeds go directly to the purchase of the uniforms.

So far, the fundraiser has more than 130 supporters, and 30% of the goal has been reached. With just under three weeks remaining, the team urges the community, West Side alumni, and local businesses to support their efforts.

“In order to grow our program, we need our community to support our student athletes,” said head football Coach Eric Schreiber.

The team is looking to raise enough funds to replace all uniforms including helmets.

"In the words of Coach and former professional athlete Deion Sanders, 'if you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you feel good you play good,'” added Schreiber.

Supporters can give online at: https://givebutter.com/adiUCo or contact Coach Schreiber at eschreiber@garyschools.org

Since the beginning of the school year, the Gary Community School Corporation’s Food Service department has distributed nearly 80,000 meals to children 18 years and younger.

We want you safe, and we continue to improve our operations just for you.  Since the pandemic, Food Services has ensured that menu items maintain their proper temperatures until they are in your hands.  We only ask that you store food immediately after receiving the food items to ensure food safety.  SodexoMAGIC, our food provider, ensures that all items are pre-packaged to address the safety concerns around COVID-19.

Gary Schools Welcome Students Back for In-Person Instruction
Teachers have been trained to instruct in-person and virtual students simultaneously with the aid of cameras, white boards and various educational applications. Live instruction takes place Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The buildings are closed on Wednesdays for deep cleaning while all students participate in online instruction.
Each school developed a re-entry plan designed to safely bring students and staff into the facilities at scheduled times. Temperatures are checked before entering the building, and hand sanitizer stations are readily available at the entrances and most doorways. Each student and teacher has desk shields and are required to wear a mask when moving around the building and classroom.

“We’re really proud of our teachers and administrators for being so nimble through all the changes,” added McNulty. “We thank the parents for being patient and understanding as we implement the new processes in every school.”

Breakfast and lunch are pre-packaged, and students are assigned numbers to indicate where they should sit on the bus, in classrooms and in the cafeteria. Each school also hosted virtual parent meetings to explain the new protocols and procedures for in-person learning.

“We look forward to the day when we can bring back all of our students,” said McNulty. “We will continue to watch the COVID-19 numbers, and inform our families of any changes in operation as they occur.”
