Add one more thing to the list of tasks your smartphone can perform. University of Houston researchers have released an open-source dataset offering instructions to people interested in building their own smartphone microscope. Read more here.

Designing new metal alloys using engineered nanostructures
Materials science is a field that Jason Trelewicz has been interested in since he was a young child, when his father-an engineer-would bring him to work. In the materials lab at his father's workplace, Trelewicz would use optical microscopes to zoom in on material surfaces, intrigued by all the distinct features he would see as light interacted with different samples. Scientists visualize structure of key DNA repair component with near-atomic resolution
Cells continuously replicate to repair and replace damaged tissue, and each division requires duplicating DNA. As the DNA duplicates, errors inevitably occur, resulting in damage that, if left unrepaired, can lead to cellular death.   Read more  here.

Student Council Grows Leadership Team

MSA Student Council is continuing to grow its leadership team and pleased to announce the appointments of Communication Chair, Regional Liaison Chair, and eight Regional Liaisons.

Shardai Johnson, Communication Chair, will oversee the Student Council social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) and help coordinate outbound communications. She is a graduate student at Tuskegee University in the Material Science and Engineering program and her current research is centered on the morphological effects of low temperature plasma on hydrothermal carbonization of catalyzed waste coffee. She is looking forward to bridging students across different disciplines with the Microscopy Society of America.

Erica Stevens, Regional Liaison Chair, will oversee the Student Council membership campaign and coordinate efforts for the Regional Liaisons. She is a third-year Materials Science and Engineering Ph.D. student at the University of Pittsburgh working under Dr. Markus Chmielus. Her primary research focuses on additive manufacturing of functional materials, particularly magnetocaloric materials.

The Regional Liaisons will focus on promoting MSA Student Council, develop relationships with undergraduate and graduate students and Local Affiliated Societies in their region, and encourage involvement in MSA Student Council activities at Microscopy and Microanalysis.

The MSA Student Council (StC) is organizing the 2nd annual Pre-meeting Congress for Students, Postdocs and Early-career Professionals in Microscopy & Microanalysis (PMCx60), to be held on the Saturday preceding M&M 2018 in Baltimore, MD.

The PMCx60 is a one-day conference organized by and for students and early-career professionals, and offers a highly interactive forum for participants to share cutting edge research, network, and engage with peers ahead of the main meeting.

The StC is soliciting financial support from the MSA community, and welcomes corporate sponsorship and donations from individuals/organizations to help build the future of microscopy and microanalysis.

Please consider sponsoring, donating to, and attending the 2018 PMCx60 in Baltimore, MD. To learn about the benefits of being a PMCx60 sponsor, email the StC at [email protected], or donate to the PMCx60 via the MSA donation page ( microscopy.org/donation, include "PMCx60" in the "Donation Made by:" field).

Make sure that we have the correct contact information for your LAS, including the current President, URL and Facebook address if applicable.

Au revoir!
This is my last LAS News Update, as my term as LAS Director is over at the end of 2017. Heartfelt thanks to my fellow Council members, Association Management, and to all the Local Affiliates for making these past 3 years challenging and fun. I've learned a lot, and enjoyed meeting so many of you over the past 3 years.

I'll still be around, working on the LAS website project, so stay tuned. I hope to see you in Baltimore next August.

Please welcome Patty Jansma to her new role as LAS Director in 2018! Reach out to her ( [email protected]) with your LAS requests.

Happy holidays!
Bev
