A note from Mayor Jill Rusk

As the days grow longer and the first signs of spring begin to appear, the City is starting to come back to life. It was a long, hard winter for everyone and I know I'm not alone when I look out my windows and experience the sheer joy of seeing green grass on the ground and the immense piles of snow slowly disappearing.

I'm excited to see our parks filling up again, folks reconnecting outdoors, and a full calendar of seasonal activities just around the corner.

On the topic of reconnecting with your neighbors, I wanted to share that the City has launched a 'Good Neighbor Award' where we plan to recognize those nominated by their neighbors who continually go above and beyond to help make the lives of their friends and neighbors better. This recognition celebrates everyday leadership — the neighbor who checks in, lends a hand, shows up, and makes the City a better place simply by being part of it. If there is someone you would like to nominate, please do so by March 20th, here.

Spring is always an exciting time in our city. It’s when many of our community programs, events, and improvement projects begin to ramp up. Over the next few months you'll see some exciting improvements beginning at Washington Park...and before you know it, beach passes will be for sale! Read below for upcoming events including our annual Eggstravaganza (April 4), an Earth Day Clean Up (April 18), and more.

The next United Way Mobile Food Pantry is scheduled for Friday, March 27, from 12:30 – 2:00 pm at St. John’s Christian Church. Click here to view the full United Way Mobile Food Pantry calendar.

As a reminder, be sure to check out the City's social media pages (including the Groton City Police Department Facebook) and our website when significant weather events are forecasted for important City-wide updates and special events.

Respectfully,

The Municipal Building is open to the public Monday-Thursday from 8 am-4 pm

CITY OF GROTON GOOD NEIGHBOR AWARD

After a long winter marked by record-breaking snowfall, freezing temperatures, and more shoveling than anyone signed up for, the City of Groton wants to recognize the neighbors who have stepped up when it mattered most.

The City of Groton Good Neighbor Award aims to honor residents who have gone above and beyond during this challenging season — clearing driveways, checking in on others, helping with errands, sharing resources, or simply being the steady, reliable presence every street hopes for. The City is proud to recognize residents who go above and beyond to strengthen our community. We will recognize individuals who consistently demonstrate kindness, service, and a genuine commitment to helping those around them.

This recognition celebrates everyday leadership — the neighbor who checks in, lends a hand, shows up, and makes Groton a better place simply by being part of it. Nominate your neighbor by March 20.

SNAP. REPORT & INFORM WITH MYCOAST CT

Each month, certain high tides rise higher than normal, sometimes leading to flooding in low-lying coastal areas—even on clear, sunny days. These events provide a valuable opportunity to observe how water levels are changing along Connecticut’s coast.

With the recent winter storm we are also reminded of how snow and ice can exacerbate flooding, and we can look back to February 2016 when the photo above was taken of Gravel Street in Mystic.

Help us track flooding by taking and sharing photos during these events using the MyCoast app.

High Tide Outlook:

• February 28 | 6:00am - 7:00am

Visit the MyCoast CT Reports page to see the photos you and your fellow community members have uploaded.

How to Submit a Photo

Whether it’s during an extreme high tide, after a storm, or on a clear day, your observations make a difference. Please take safety precautions while taking photos.

  1.  Download the MyCoast app in the iOS App Store or Google Play Store
  2. Open the app and snap a photo: Flooded roads, water on sidewalks, overtopped seawalls, beach erosion, or clear/dry areas, all are useful
  3. Upload photo through the app
  4. MyCoast automatically adds location, tide, and weather data

Safety First

  • Follow local emergency alerts and evacuation notices
  • Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters
  • Take photos only when it is safe to do so—never during dangerous conditions
  • Report Spills or other Environmental Emergencies to the CT DEEP at: 860-424-3338

Why it Matters

Your photos go straight to the MyCoast Connecticut Database to help planners, scientists, and local leaders:

  • Understand where and when flooding is happening
  • Monitor how the shoreline is changing over time
  • Make better decisions about coastal infrastructure and preparedness

This is a simple but powerful way to support resilience planning in your community. Thank you for sharing your photos. Your participation helps make Connecticut’s coast more resilient. Even one photo can make a difference. – The MyCoast CT Team

This pilot program is led by Connecticut Sea Grant, Connecticut Institute for Resilience and Climate Adaptation, and Connecticut National Estuarine Research Reserve to improve storm readiness and coastal resilience and is funded by the Long Island Sound Futures Fund.
