Dear Fatema,
As many of you know, yesterday afternoon the Trump administration announced a temporary pause on all federal grants, cooperative agreements, and loans.
According to a memo issued by the Office of Management and Budget, the suspension was set to go into effect today, January 28, at 5 p.m. Eastern Time. The memo also states that federal agencies have until February 10 to submit detailed information on programs and projects related to the temporary pause. At the time of this communication, a judge has temporarily paused Trump's freeze on grants and loans until February 3.
Currently, we do not have much detail to provide beyond media reports, but we are closely monitoring the situation. We realize that many SMFM members are concerned by this new development and the impact it may have on your patients, as well as many members who are directly impacted themselves. As we gather more details we will alert you with additional information as soon as possible.
SMFM’s mission supports the clinical practice of maternal-fetal medicine by providing education, promoting research, and engaging in advocacy to optimize equitable perinatal outcomes for all people who desire or experience pregnancy. As this situation becomes clearer, we will engage with legislative partners at the appropriate time to help ensure that our members can continue to support our collective mission.
If you have questions about the impact of any federally funded program you are involved with, we encourage you to reach out to your institutional leadership.
