Sending heartfelt prayers and comfort to the family, neighbors and emergency responders affected by the recent tragic losses in Cornelius. | Dear Friends, Neighbors, Colleagues, Partners, and Fellow Advocates, | | Extraordinary people rose to the occasion during the COVID-19 pandemic, putting their own health at risk to serve the greater good. One urgent need—food insecurity—grew rapidly, placing intense pressure on local food pantries that required swift and significant capacity building. While several pantries were strengthened during this time, today I want to spotlight the contribution and perseverance of one remarkable person in particular, in honor of his recent promotion. | | |
Forest Grove School District has appointed Brian Burke as the new principal of the high school. As vice principal, Brian played a key role in launching a food distribution hub on the north side of the campus—an effort made possible through the dedication of faculty and volunteers.
Like other local pantry leaders, Brian helped significantly expand our community’s capacity to provide essential food resources to families and youth during the pandemic recovery.
While recognized for improving student achievement, strengthening academic rigor, and boosting graduation rates, Brian’s leadership in addressing food insecurity deserves equal recognition. ARTICLE

To put things into perspective, the estimated unmet needs in 2020 were staggering:
- More than 1,200 local households—over 5,500 individuals—relied on weekly food assistance.
- Underserved populations lacked consistent access to high-quality, nutritious foods.
- There was no effective system in place for mobile cold storage and food transportation.
Expanded food access and cold chain infrastructure—through key capital investments—changed that. These improvements increased our capacity to distribute fresh, nutritious, and culturally or dietary-specific foods, including surplus from stores and farms.
This success was made possible through strong government and nonprofit partnerships, and Federal funds. Oregon Food Bank, Washington County Health & Human Services, Forest Grove Fire & Rescue, JLieb Foods, and Forest Grove Foundation each played a critical role in bolstering the capacity of local pantries and ensuring residents received essential, life-saving support. Their legacy thrives today!
It’s a powerful model—one we can and should replicate in future emergencies.
