MainStreet Oceanside Community Update
Explore • Experience • Enjoy • Embrace Downtown Oceanside
MainStreet Oceanside welcomed community members, partners, and stakeholders to our March Morning Meeting to share updates on downtown initiatives, upcoming events, infrastructure improvements, and cultural investments. From Taste of Spring preparations to sustainability efforts and exciting arts developments, the morning highlighted the many ways MainStreet Oceanside continues working with partners to strengthen and celebrate our downtown. Here’s a recap of the latest news through the lens of our 4 E’s: Explore, Experience, Enjoy, and Embrace.
| | Explore: A Stronger, More Sustainable Downtown | | Downtown infrastructure improvements are officially underway. The City’s Phase Two of the Downtown Water & Sewer Replacement Project will replace aging pipes — some nearly 100 years old — expand recycled water infrastructure, and modernize systems to support future downtown growth. City staff is coordinating closely with MainStreet Oceanside to minimize impacts to Sunset Market and special events. | | | In addition, WM's (Waste Management) Recycle Education and Outreach Representative, Jenna Roripaugh, shared updates on SB 1383 compliance and diversion efforts. Residents are reminded to "Recycle Right" by not bagging recyclables, rinsing containers before placing them in recycling bins, and keeping plastics out of compost bins. Oceanside residents may attend a compost facility tour on April 18 and can access free compost at El Corazon with proof of residency. These projects reflect ongoing investment in a more resilient and sustainable downtown. | | Experience: A Season of Signature Events | | |
Taste of Spring returns on March 21 from 1–4 PM and is already nearing sell-out. This year’s earlier timeframe supports participating restaurants as they transition into dinner service. With only 500 tickets available and family and couples packages offered, we encourage early purchase. We are also seeking approximately 20 additional volunteers to help make the event a success. Our new volunteer platform, POINT, makes registration and sign-ups easier and more streamlined. Email Bobbie with volunteer questions or for assistance.
Community engagement opportunities are also on the calendar:
-
A City Capital Improvement Workshop will also be held at City Council Chambers on March 4 at 5:30 PM to discuss future infrastructure investments and priorities in an accessible evening format.
-
A Neighborhood Watch meeting will take place on March 31 from 5:30-7 PM at John Landes Park, featuring Captain Scott Garrett and Prevention Specialist Ashley Sanchez from the Oceanside Police Department.
- Earth Day events include a climate literacy presentation on April 22 and the City’s Earth Day celebration on April 25.
Looking ahead, Oceanside is preparing for an exciting America 250 summer lineup, including the Oceanside Independence Parade on June 27, the Oceanside/USA 250 Festival following the parade, tentative July 3 fireworks, and O-Fest on July 4. Expect downtown banners, youth art activations, and community-wide celebrations throughout the season.
| | Enjoy: A Thriving Local Business Community | | Our MSO Membership Program continues to grow, strengthening the businesses that make downtown Oceanside vibrant. Membership is open to residents, businesses, nonprofits, and community champions. Collaborator-level members receive direct support, including marketing consultation, website strategy, placemaking and mural guidance, and an upcoming AI-in-business workshop this May. Supporting local businesses directly strengthens downtown’s economic vitality and ensures a dynamic and welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike. | | | Embrace: A Vibrant Arts and Culture Scene | | |
Arts and culture continue to shape downtown’s identity. A new mural by local artist, Mike Smack of MS Perceptions, is nearing completion at the future 1888 location, a themed restaurant celebrating Oceanside’s founding year. The project is another example of continued investment in arts-driven placemaking. | | | We also heard from Maria Mingalone, Executive Director at the Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA), who shared plans for a 50% campus expansion — growing from 20,000 to 30,000 square feet. The expansion will include the original Fire Station 1 and will add new gallery space, a dedicated arts education center, restored historic architecture, and enhanced community gathering areas. OMA’s $10 million capital campaign is now 90% funded, with construction anticipated to begin in 2027. These cultural investments reinforce Oceanside as a growing arts destination. | | |
We extend a sincere thank you to our guest speakers from Oceanside Museum of Art and Waste Management for delivering thoughtful, impactful information in a short window of time. We appreciate your partnership and your continued commitment to strengthening our downtown community.
Thank you to our sponsors and community partners who make this work possible. We look forward to seeing you at Taste of Spring!
With appreciation,
The MainStreet Oceanside Team
