Protect Yourself from Fraud – It Starts with Knowing Where You’re Clicking

International Fraud Awareness Week is the perfect time to brush up on how to keep your accounts and personal information safe. Scammers are constantly coming up with new ways to trick people—but you can protect yourself with a few simple tips.

Verify Before You Click

One of the easiest ways fraudsters gain access to your information is through fake websites. Always make sure you are on a legitimate Lebanon Federal Credit Union page before entering your login information:

Check the web address carefully:

  • Our official site is https://www.lebanonfcu.org.
  • Watch for small spelling changes or extra words in the URL—fraudsters often use these to trick users.

Look for HTTPS

  • The “s” in HTTPS means the site uses encryption to protect your data.

Be cautious with links in emails or texts:

  • Instead of clicking a link, type the website address directly into your browser.

Check for contact information:

  • Legitimate sites will list official phone numbers and addresses. If you can’t find them, pause before entering personal info.

Use known sources:

  • Access your accounts via bookmarks you’ve created for the official website, not through search engine results that may point to a fake page.

Check for unusual behavior:

  • Pop-ups asking for sensitive information (like passwords or Social Security numbers) are a red flag.
  • Poor grammar, strange formatting, or broken links can also signal a fraudulent site.

Other Quick Tips to Stay Safe:

  • Never share your personal or account information over email or phone unless you initiated the contact.
  • Monitor your accounts regularly for unusual activity.
  • Use strong, unique passwords for online banking and update them regularly.

Fraud awareness is one of the best defenses you have. Stay vigilant, and remember—if something seems off, it’s always okay to pause and verify.
