Protect Your Belongings

Recently, there has been an increase in motor vehicle burglaries in our community and the surrounding towns. While the members of the Montgomery Police Department continue their investigation, we ask that residents be proactive in protecting their property by removing valuables and locking their vehicles when left unattended.

We would like to remind residents of the #9PMRoutine, which helps keep your car and home safe. Remove all valuables from your car, lock your car and home, and leave an outside light on. Complete this nightly routine and review the Burglary Prevention Checklist created by the police department to help safeguard your home and belongings.

Free, No-Fuss Tax Counseling

Somerset County’s Volunteer Services and AARP are teaming up to help residents prepare their taxes. This free tax-counseling service is available to all county residents, but specifically for older adults, residents with disabilities, and lower-income residents who need help preparing federal and New Jersey income tax returns.

There are approximately 65 volunteers providing direct support to residents at six sites in Somerset County, including the Otto Kaufman Community Center. Call the Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services at (908) 541-5710 to book your appointment. Appointments will be made until the end of tax season or until all appointments are filled. Find more information, including appointment guidelines, here.

Montgomery Municipal Center Lobby Repairs

Due to plumbing repairs crossing the lobby floor, lobby bathrooms will be inaccessible from Friday, March 27 to Sunday, March 29. The library will remain open and fully accessible, and visitors may use the library restroom during this time. Access to the police lobby will also be blocked from the front entrance; those needing to reach the police department may use the west side entrance by the elevators. All access will be restored on Monday, March 30.

The municipal building was originally constructed by the Somerset County Improvement Authority (SCIA), which managed the project and oversaw the contractors. Because the township did not control the construction process, certain building issues fell outside of our direct authority to prevent, but have become our responsibility to correct pursuant to the agreement with SCIA. However, as part of a settlement agreement between the general contractor, SCIA and the township, the township established a capital fund to address building-related deficiencies or to make major repairs. Any necessary major corrective work – such as repairs occurring this weekend from settlement of a sewer pipe – draws the capital account.

As the weather gets warmer, more people may knock on your door, including solicitors. Any resident can register their property to be included on the “No Solicitation” Registry. The registry is maintained by the Township Clerk’s Office and is provided to those receiving Peddler Permits through the township. Find the No Solicitation Application Form here.

A list of the approved peddlers permits will soon be available on the Township Website, Clerk’s Office.

Due to sewer main construction, the Montgomery Public Works Yard at 12 Harlingen Road will be temporarily closed to the public from April 20 to approximately July 20. During this time, the container facility and large containers for recycling materials will be closed. There will be no recycling blue bin pick-up. Find more information and possible alternatives for recycling or disposal on our website.
