Stay Safe This Holiday Season, and Beyond

December 2024

Keep This Information with You Always

From the desk of Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Powers

Dear neighbors,

I started the Elder Justice Unit in 2023 because I saw a huge need in our community. We had left behind our senior population, making them vulnerable to crimes and scams that could easily devastate their remaining years.

It was wrong, and I wanted to fight back.

This holiday season, I want to make sure you stay safe--not only now, but in the future. That's why I've included a list below of the most important things seniors need to remember to protect themselves from scams.

I hope you'll save this email and reference it often. A few simple steps can really make a difference, and help you keep your hard-earned money.

Have a wonderful holiday season!

Always fighting for you,

Melissa Powers

THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER TO STAY SAFE FROM SCAMS

1. Be Cautious with Personal Information

  • Avoid Sharing Details: Never share Social Security numbers, bank account information, or credit card numbers unless you are certain of the recipient's legitimacy.
  • Verify Requests: If someone claims to be from a government agency or company, independently verify their identity by calling the official contact number.

2. Recognize Common Scam Tactics

  • Pressure Tactics: Scammers often create a sense of urgency or fear to rush decisions. Pause and evaluate any situation carefully.
  • Too Good to Be True: Offers of “free” money, prizes, or investment returns that sound too good to be true likely are.

3. Stay Informed and Educated

  • Learn About Scams: Regularly update yourself on common scams targeting seniors, such as Medicare fraud, tech support scams, and romance scams.
  • Local Resources: Utilize community workshops or senior centers that provide information on scams.

4. Use Technology Safely

  • Secure Online Practices: Avoid clicking on unknown links or downloading attachments from unsolicited emails.
  • Password Protection: Use strong, unique passwords for online accounts and consider multi-factor authentication for added security.

5. Have a Trusted Advisor

  • Designate a Second Opinion: Before making major financial decisions, consult a trusted family member, friend, or financial advisor.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If a scam is suspected, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), local law enforcement, or a consumer protection agency.
