Sharing our wealth of arts and culture.
We're having an ARTS BLAST!
Supporting arts and cultural councils everywhere.
|
|
It's Monday morning and most of us are waiting to see if Dorian will be exhausted and satisfied after his cruel pass over the Bahamas. I'm packed for evacuation — sort of — and although I'd rather stay home, will probably do the smart thing and go to a friend's house on higher ground.
In any event, I'm shutting down and packing up the computer for now. When this is all over and power is on, I'll do my best to report on the state of the arts in Arts Blast land, hoping it will be nothing but good news.
So, chin up, head down, hang on and meet me here in a couple of days.
Prayers for our friends in the Bahamas and everyone in Dorian's path.

I WON'T TAKE TIME TO DELETE EVERYTHING FROM THE AUG. 27 ISSUE. ASSUME THAT MOST EVENTS HAVE BEEN CANCELED OR POSTPONED.

EASTERN FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE WILL BE CLOSED FROM FRIDAY, AUGUST 30 THROUGH TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3. THAT MEANS THE FIRST REHEARSAL OF THE BREVARD COMMUNITY CHORUS WILL BE DELAYED UNTIL TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10.
Eastern Florida State College officials are continuing to carefully monitor Hurricane Dorian, which could impact Florida this Labor Day weekend. Updates about campus conditions will be provided via the college’s TitanAlerts system, website and social media platforms.

There are new “things” going on at Indian River State College. After a summer of ripping things out, moving things around, adding more things, and, in general, getting a facelift, the McAlpin Performing Arts Center on the Fort Pierce campus of Indian River State College is ready to kick off the 40-Years-of-the-McAlpin season. The Indian River State College Foundation’s generosity has given the theatre new life: State-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, a new orchestra pit, new backstage theatre equipment, and a new look to audience seating.
The main theatre area has an orchestra pit and a proscenium stage, and can seat 639 theatre-goers. For more intimate performances, the Wynne Black Box theatre seats 100, with the audience surrounding the stage.

Season subscriptions have been on sale for weeks and individual ticket sales begin Sept. 3. The OnSTAGE! series offers seven shows for $70: Two comedies (Barefoot in the Park and Hotbed Hotel), a musical (Grease), and performances by the music and dance students in the Performing and Visual Arts program at IRSC. There are five shows in addition to the OnStage package, with tickets sold separately.
IRSC’s Director of Theatre and Performing and Visual Arts Chair, David Moberg, has been guiding students and productions there since 1981. He said, “Over the years we have refined and increased opportunities for student learning in the Arts (at IRSC). Every student, every production here has been a wonderful adventure.” If he had to choose one of the new season’s many great shows to look forward to, it would be Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, Moberg said. The drama will be in the Wynne Black Box Theatre in October.
Tickets are available online at
www.irsc.edu
or at the IRSC box office (Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) or by phone, 800-220-9915. The campus is at 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce.

Don't be like me.
Keep your library card current and know where you put it. Walking into a library — any library — is like opening a bottomless treasure chest. When did libraries stop being imposing buildings where you could borrow books to take home and return in two weeks, or sit and read current newspapers and magazines? They've turned into all-purpose, one-stop-shops for entertainment, information, socializing, and community service. Libraries, you've come a long way, Baby!
And you, with your library card in hand, don’t even have to put on shoes and long pants and leave the house. All the library systems in Arts Blast land offer a downloadable app that allows cardholders to access books to download, many of them available as audiobooks.
Arts Blast will feature area libraries one by one. Martin County Library System programs are often in the calendar listings. As a spokesman told me last week, "All programs are free and open to everyone. The more the merrier!"
|
The Okeechobee County Public Library
is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and 40,025 cardholders will be blowing out the candles. At least, we can imagine that’s what will happen, but in reality, those cardholders are spread out over a wide area in Central Florida. The library at 206 SW 16th St. in Okeechobee is the only bricks and mortar branch in the county, but through the library’s association with the Heartland Library Cooperative, it serves people in Okeechobee, Desoto, Hardee, Glades, and Highlands Counties.
|
Sonya Chapa, Library Specialist II at the library, said there’s no Bookmobile service in the county, but the Okeechobee Library has a courier van that makes daily trips to the other HLC libraries to pick up and exchange items. She said the Okeechobee Library has made strides to serve more residents “by extending hours to six days a week and providing more outreach services such as visits and events at our local schools. Simply put, if the people can’t come to us, then we will go out to the people."
|
A partnership of local organizations has jumped on the Little Free Libraries bandwagon to build and install thirty of the popular neighborhood book exchanges. Chapa said, “The goal for the Little Free Libraries is to provide a free book exchange to underserved areas and populations, along with increased educational opportunities for these communities.” Books will come from several sources. The Okeechobee Chapter of Rotary Club International will donate money to buy books and will sponsor one of the Little Free Libraries, and the library’s Friends group has agreed to budget for children’s books.
|
“The Okeechobee Library has also been approached by the Health Science Center Libraries of the University of Florida to work on a joint grant that would provide children, teenage, and adult books on health information and practices in both English and Spanish to be distributed among the Little Free Library system,” Chapa said.
The project needs more than books, though. “The buildings are being graciously provided by Home Builders Institute, HBI.org, whose students are building 30 Little Free Libraries for the Okeechobee Library. Installation will be done in coordination with the Okeechobee County Maintenance department and Okeechobee County Parks and Recreation department.” Sometimes it takes a village.
|
The library’s Summer Reading program was so successful that a new effort, after-school programs, will launch in September. Twice a month “students will experience stories, movement, and learning through crafts and experiments,” Chapa said. The library uses its one available display case and limited shelving to exhibit the work of local artists and historians. More display cases are on Chapa’s wish list.
Okeechobee Public Library supplies reading and listening material, meeting space for homeschool and tutoring groups, free clubs and instructional programs, and coordination with departments and organizations offering community programs throughout the year. Visit the
website
to learn more.

And Speaking of Libraries ...
|
|
If you're really wild about libraries, you might want to hit the 19th annual Library of Congress National Book Festival Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The 2019 National Book Festival is free and open to everyone. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. Can't make the trip to D.C. on such short notice? You can
follow the festival blog and subscribe to latest updates here.
To download the National Book Festival App, visit the Library of Congress Apps page at
loc.gov/apps/
.
It didn't take much to pull me into the black hole that is the
Library of Congress website. It's the world's largest library, holding more than 168 million books, recordings, photographs, maps — and that's just the beginning.
If you're old enough, you might remember doing research for school papers at your local library, poring over pages of reference material dragged from the stacks by a librarian with a pencil stuck in her bun. (Too much of a stereotype? Sorry.) Or maybe you spent time at the microfilm machine, never dreaming you'd be able to access information on anything you've (n)ever heard of from a telephone!
|
|
From the website:
"The Library was founded in 1800, making it the oldest federal cultural institution in the nation. On August 24, 1814, British troops burned the Capitol building (where the Library was housed) and destroyed the Library's core collection of 3,000 volumes. On January 30, 1815, Congress approved the purchase of Thomas Jefferson’s personal library of 6,487 books for $23,950."
The Library of Congress collections include children's books from as far back as 1763, including about 100 extremely rare ones. The illustrations you see here are covers of some old favorites. There's also the world's largest comic book collection; the oldest, Popular Comics, is from 1936.
While much of the LOC's collection is in the public domain, not everything is, so before using an illustration or a copy, look into its copyright restrictions.
Pick a rainy day, put your feet up, and turn yourself loose in the virtual
Library of Congress. It's your library!

Smithsonian Museum Day Alert
|
|
Every year, Smithsonian magazine offers everyone, not only subscribers, free admission to a network of participating museums round the country. This is the fifteenth year and it’s the
Smithsonian Year of Music.
There are a few rules to heed and steps to take but it’s easy enough. Actually, it’s fun. When you go to the
website,
you may pick any state to find out which museums and cultural institutions are available, so even if you end up going to one in your own neighborhood, that search can open your eyes to what fun lies beyond the horizon. Bottles? Southern Food and Beverage? New Orleans Jazz? Quilts? Mining? There’s a museum for that!
For example, I know I’ll be using my free tickets to visit one on the Treasure Coast, so I put in my zip code and followed the path to downloading tickets. Then, getting curious, I clicked on Florida, then on a couple of other states, and before I knew it, I was making a list of places I want to see and my armchair-traveler side was all packed and ready to go! Go ahead. Try it!
|
|
Sophie Bentham-Wood, director of marketing and communications at Vero Beach Museum of Art, said docents will be available for tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. They’ll highlight art that features musical themes as well as interactive displays. “Families are invited to visit the Museum’s Art Zone where hands-on activities will include a variety of musical instruments,” she said. Treasure Coast Percussion has plans for a drum circle in Holmes Great Hall at 1 p.m. Drums and other instruments will be provided and there’s no charge.
I haven’t seen it online this year but I think I remember that some museums reached their limit early in the campaign in 2018, so don’t wait to start exploring.
