Recovering together

Together, we are still working to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl. I am immensely grateful to my Precinct 2 team, volunteers, and partners who stepped up immediately and have worked tirelessly to help Precinct 2 families find resources and respite. From clearing trees to organizing food distributions, we have demonstrated our community's strength and resilience yet again.

SBA town hall meetings

Precinct 2 is partnering with the Small Business Administration (SBA) for a series of town hall meetings to inform residents about applying for federal assistance. Click here for more information or see below to find the one nearest you:

Disaster Recovery Center

The Felix L Baldree Building is operating as a Disaster Recovery Center. The FEMA and SBA Customer Service Representatives can help residents impacted by Beryl with questions, guide them through the process of applying for a disaster loan, assist with uploading documents, check on the status of applications, and offer support in completing reconsideration requests for the SBA Disaster Loan Program.

Apply for federal assistance

Harris County residents can now apply for FEMA Individual Assistance to help recover from Hurricane Beryl.


This program offers financial help for:

• Temporary housing

• Emergency home repairs

• Uninsured or underinsured losses to personal property

• Disaster legal services

• Disaster unemployment assistance

• Medical, dental, and funeral expenses caused by the disaster

Additionally, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loans are now available to businesses affected by the hurricane. Loans can be used to pay debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills that can’t be paid because of the disaster impact.


Deadline to apply for physical damage is September 10, 2024 and the deadline to apply for economic injury is April 14, 2025.

State of the Precinct

Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s State of the Precinct Luncheon, hosted by the Pasadena, Deer Park, Clear Lake, South Belt-Ellington, and La Porte-Bayshore chambers of commerce. With approximately 650 attendees, it was the largest turnout in the event's history. Commissioner Garcia and the Precinct 2 team always look forward to this opportunity to meet with business and community leaders in our region and share highlights of all the progress happening across Precinct 2.

Student2Government Wins NACO Award

We are thrilled to announce that our Student2Government program has been nationally recognized by the National Association of Counties (NACO) in the Civic Education and Public Information Best in Category award! This recognition highlights the program’s impact on fostering a culture of civic leadership among teens. Student2Government is dedicated to inspiring youth to become agents of positive change. It empowers them to make a difference in their communities through volunteerism, public service, and active participation in the electoral process.

Parks and Recreation Month: Youth sports spotlight

July is National Parks and Recreation Month! Precinct 2 is proud to maintain and operate 55 parks throughout Harris County. With over 4,000 acres of parks and 27 miles of trails, there's a variety of exciting recreational opportunities and programs including sports! Leaving for vacation? The Harris County Sheriff Office offers a Vacation Watch Program. It allows residents in the unincorporated area of Harris County to have deputies to watch their home while they are out. To sign up for the program, click here.

In the last month, Commissioner Garcia led or voted in favor of the following items:

Hardy Yards Multifamily Housing Project: Commissioner Garcia supported and voted for the $13.7 million Hardy Yards Multifamily Housing Project, which will provide approximately 500 affordable and workforce housing units in Houston's Near Northside community. The housing project will feature structured parking, green space, and retail space. The development will foster a healthy, sustainable environment and support local businesses. The project is supported by ARPA funds and reflects Commissioner Garcia's commitment to creating a vibrant and inclusive community in Precinct 2.


Project GRAD Services: Commissioner Garcia voted to approve a $520,000 agreement with the Tejano Center to provide Project GRAD Houston literacy services and programs. This investment will support Precinct 2 high school students in deciding on careers, exploring education and training options, applying to college, and accessing financial aid. Project GRAD services will assess needs, develop education and career goals, and connect students to valuable information and resources.

Resolution

Clear the Shelters Pet Adoption Events: Commissioner Garcia presented a resolution recognizing the upcoming Clear the Shelters pet adoption events. The Harris County Public Health Department, through the Harris County Pets Resource Center, aims to significantly increase the number of successful pet adoptions and provide homes for many animals.
