Greetings!

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is dominating the public conversation about technology and becoming more and more present in many aspects of our daily lives – from education to healthcare. At TGH, we recognize that AI has the power to expand opportunity and put critical resources at the fingertips of more people but, on the flip side, it also has the potential to exacerbate the digital divide if the benefits of AI accrue only to those who already have the tools and support to utilize it effectively.

At TGH, we’re working to meet this moment – and support our learners – in several ways. Recently, our Curriculum and Instruction team worked with Agent.ai to develop two new courses on AI topics: "How to Build an AI Agent" and "Intro to Artificial Intelligence Agents." These courses break down complex AI concepts like prompts, Large Language Models (LLMs), and levels of autonomy into lessons that are practical and easy to follow. We are grateful to Agent.ai’s collaboration, and excited to see how our TGH learners will use these courses to bring their own AI agents to life.

In addition, TGH is leveraging AI tools in our own day-to-day work to make TGH content more accessible and responsive. Our CEO, Dahlia Bousaid Cox, recently spoke with IT Brew about how TGH, as an organization, is utilizing AI while also remaining cognizant that the digital divide is a reality even among nonprofit staff when it comes to the adoption of AI.

TGH will continue working to ensure that all of our learners have access to both the fundamental building blocks of digital access and to updated curricular materials that reflect the growth in AI and help ensure that learners can utilize AI tools safely and effectively.

Sincerely,

The TGH Team

Expanding Digital Access for Justice-Impacted Learner in Essex County

In September, TGH announced an expansion of its work with incarcerated adults and youth, launching partnerships with the Essex County Sheriff’s Department’s Supporting Transitions And Reentry (STAR) program, the Worcester County House of Corrections, and Worcester County Sheriff's Office Resource Center

The latest partnerships in Essex and Worcester counties are the first at county-run reentry programs and an expansion of TGH’s work with Ameelio, a technology nonprofit providing communication and educational tools for incarcerated individuals and their loved ones. The effort is made possible through a $6 million grant awarded last year by the Massachusetts Broadband Institute’s (MBI) Digital Equity Partnerships Program, of which $4 million has been allocated to TGH and Ameelio to bring digital skills courses to more than 3,600 justice-impacted adults and youth housed in county jails and Department of Youth Services (DYS) facilities in Massachusetts. Programming supported by the grant is already underway in Barnstable, Franklin, and Suffolk counties.

More than 8,000 individuals are currently incarcerated in county and local jails in Massachusetts. The majority of correctional facilities and reentry programs have limited and outdated technology, making it difficult for individuals to acclimate to the rapidly advancing digital world upon release. By reaching learners during their incarceration, TGH is helping to address barriers before release, equipping individuals with tools that reduce recidivism and open pathways to employment, continued education, and stronger community connections.

Tech Goes Home Releases 2024 Annual Report

ICYMI! TGH released our annual report for 2024, highlighting continued progress towards closing the digital divide in Massachusetts.

As CEO Dahlia Bousaid Cox wrote in her introductory letter, “In 2024, we served over 6,000 learners, distributed more than 5,700 digital devices, and scaled our impact to 30 cities in Massachusetts. As we work to maintain and build on that momentum, we are acutely aware that national and international circumstances have put additional pressure on community-facing nonprofits. This landscape has presented new and unprecedented challenges, particularly in advancing digital equity. At the same time, demand for TGH programming has never been greater. TGH remains clear-eyed about our mission, and we are working diligently to strategically position ourselves for the future so that we can continue serving as many people as possible in as many places as possible.”

The Time Is Now Campaign

As we celebrate TGH’s 25th anniversary, we recently launched our “Time is Now” campaign – aiming to raise $500,000 to bolster TGH’s ability to provide reliable, affordable digital access and essential digital skills.

Earlier this year, when the federal government announced that it was cancelling billions in funding for communities through the Digital Equity Act, it was a sign that states and community-based organizations would be largely on their own when it comes to efforts to close the digital divide. Closing the digital divide is both urgent and complex. Still today, hundreds of thousands of people in Massachusetts – and millions across the country – don’t have access to the digital tools and support they need to fully participate in the digital world.

TGH stands ready to forge ahead, but needs your support to reach more people in more places than ever before. Can you help us reach our $500,000 goal to support the thousands of people and families who need us now?
