Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This is a time to learn about feelings, emotions, and how we take care of our minds. Just like we go to the doctor when our body is sick, it’s important to get help when we feel sad, worried, or angry. Everyone has feelings, and it’s okay to talk about them.
Children with disabilities may have extra challenges that make life harder sometimes. They might feel left out, confused, or stressed. Parents and helpers like teachers, therapists, and school staff can support children by listening and being patient. When we all work together, we help kids feel safe, strong, and cared for.
This month, let’s check in on each other and talk about how we feel. Take time to rest, play, and enjoy things that make you happy. If you or your child need help, it’s okay to ask. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should go through it alone.
If you have questions or concerns about supporting your child at home and while they are in school, please visit our website or give us a call at (800) 640-4553.

Parent Involvement Survey
If your child receives special education services, you are invited to fill out the 2024–2025 South Dakota Parent Involvement Survey before May 31st. This short survey lets you share your thoughts about how your school includes you in your child’s special education. Your answers will help make programs better for families like yours.
The survey is from the South Dakota Department of Education and the U.S. Office of Special Education Programs. Your answers are private and will not include your name. You can get a printed survey from your school in 12 different languages, or fill it out online in English or Spanish. To learn more, ask your school’s special education staff or visit the South Dakota Department of Education website.

Summer Activity
Summer is here, and it's time for fun in the sun! For kids with disabilities, there are many exciting and safe activities to enjoy. You can play games, make art, or even go on adventures. The key is to find activities that make them smile and feel good. Whether it's splashing in water or drawing with chalk, there's something for everyone to enjoy this summer.
One fun idea is to create a sensory-friendly play area at home. Fill a small pool with soft balls to make a ball pit, or use a blanket and some toys to build a cozy fort. You can also play with bean bags, tossing them into a basket or balancing them on your head. These games help with movement and are super fun! For kids who like music, try a dance party with your favorite songs. Dancing is a great way to move your body and have a blast.
If you're looking to make new friends, consider joining a summer camp or an online class. Some camps are designed just for kids with disabilities and offer activities like art, science, and games. Online classes can connect you with other kids who share your interests, like building with LEGOs or painting. Remember, summer is a great time to try new things and have fun every day!
