OCTOBER NEWSLETTER
Leading in Conservation

Natural lands have intrinsic beauty and value beyond measure. But, they are also a wise investment. Every $1 spent on land conservation returns $4-11 in air pollution reduction, carbon sequestration, water protection, and food production.

Weantinoge is Connecticut's trusted, land acquisition leader, permanently protecting more than 10,300 acres of land across Northwest Connecticut . Each year, our acquisition team protects on average 7 new conservation properties, more than any other organization statewide. The benefits of conservation are far-reaching. Here in New England:

  • Forests and wetlands filter water and prevent floods, saving communities $157 million in filtration costs annually.
  • Healthy forests improve air quality filtering out 760 million tons of pollutants, saving $570 million in health care costs annually.
  • Forests mitigate climate change by storing enough carbon to offset 20% of the region’s greenhouse gas emissions.

As we near the end of 2019, we hope you will join our community of conservationists and make a donation in support of this work. Continued, strong conservation is essential for mitigating a warming climate, and ensuring the survival of species both common and rare.

From all of us at Weantinoge. Thank you.

Smyrski Farm Restoration Continues

Weantinoge permanently protects 29-working farms, including the 220-acre Smyrski Farm in Merryall.

This year, the farm's white barns underwent repairs and were repainted. This work was partially funded by an $8,000 grant from the 1772 Foundation in cooperation with the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation. Weantinoge matched the grant funds dollar-for-dollar.

The historic farm barns are kept in use by two local farm families: Mayapple Hill Farm and Stuart Family Farm. Click here to see pictures of the work in progress.
