Every year, we have the honour of working with incredible children and youth that continuously break down barriers to succeed. To celebrate the success of children and youth in Toronto and South Africa, we wanted to share a glimpse of their accomplishments.

Local Youth Making a Difference

Our leadership program, Take the LEAD: A Community Action Club, inspired youth to see local community challenges as opportunities to make a difference. 82% of the youth participants reported that they felt empowered to make a difference in their own communities through their Community Action Projects.

GAP Students Participate in the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship

With the support of our Canadian donors, the Leacock Foundation is providing Scholarships for 40 students at Get Ahead School in 2023. Two of these remarkable students received an invitation to compete in the Worlds Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (WIDPSC) in Durban this past March.

Athenkosi and Liyema, both Leacock Scholarship recipients, participated in the National competition in 2022 in Cape Town where their exceptional talents were noticed, qualifying them for WIPDCS.

The WIDPSC is an annual international English language debating and public speaking tournament for individual high school-level students representing different countries and takes place in Durban this year.

The championship is represented by a diverse mix of high schools from countries as far reaching as Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, the United States, England, South Africa, Lithuania, Pakistan, Cyprus, Argentina, Botswana, Israel, India, South Korea, Zimbabwe and Germany. It is an innovative five-day event which requires students to interact and collaborate with like-minded peers from diverse and different schools, cultural backgrounds and countries.
