Calling all FPA Members interested in Pro Bono Opportunities! We are excited to bring you the opportunity to volunteer with members of Gilda’s Club of Royal Oak this summer. On August 8th, the FPA of Michigan will be hosting an education session for members of Gilda’s, which is individuals and families impacted by cancer. This education session will be followed up with a separate offering of one-on-one pro bono financial counseling for any of Gilda’s members who are interested. The one-on-one pro bono financial counseling sessions will be held at Gilda’s Club on August 29th and we are looking for Pro Bono Trained Volunteers to participate in one-on-one pro bono sessions. *Note you would need to be a CFP® and have taken the FPA National Pro Bono training to participate in the one-on-one pro bono sessions. If you have not taken the FPA National Pro Bono Training, they have a one-hour virtual course for you to complete. For more information on the training, click here

If you are interested in volunteering for this rewarding opportunity or future opportunities, please click here to indicate your interest.

FPA National does have some resources available if you have never worked with those impacted by cancer in the past, so don’t let this prevent you from volunteering!

If you have additional questions about this opportunity, please reach out to Sandy Adams, Pro Bono Committee Co-Chair at Sandy.Adams@CenterFinPlan.com.

Also, Pro Bono Trained Members interested in being available for pro bono one-on-one counseling work with older adults referred from the Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology’s SAFE (Success After Financial Exploitation Program), please e-mail Sandy Adams, Pro Bono Committee Co-Chair at Sandy.Adams@CenterfinPlan.com. We will be getting referrals from the SAFE program when their older adult clients need counseling on financial planning issues and we can match clients with interested volunteers with appropriate volunteers. Please indicate whether you would be available to do sessions in-person or by phone/virtual for these clients most often in the metro Detroit area.

Advocacy Update

What is HR 1477/ S722? The Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow's Workforce Act (HR 1477 / S 722) is an important piece of legislation that would expand eligible uses of tax-favorable 529 savings plans to cover costs associated with workforce training and credentialing programs, including professional certifications like the CFP® certification.

Why support HR 1477/S722? This bill would provide valuable tax-advantaged resources for workers who pursue career growth, mid-career changes, or alternative career pathways.

As financial planners and advisers, you are uniquely suited to speak to your legislator on this topic: not only have many of you received private certifications as part of your own career path, but you also work directly with the families who rely on 529 savings plans to help their children reach their career goals which, for many families, may not include a traditional college education.

This bipartisan, bicameral legislation has increasingly strong support at the Capitol. Still, we need YOUR voice to encourage more legislators to co-sponsor HR 1477 and S 722 to keep the bill moving this session.

How can you show your support for HR 1477/S722? Please email your Member of Congress and Senator asking them to co-sponsor these bills or thanking them if they're already co-sponsoring!

Suppose you are already signed up for Voter Voice (VV) through the FPA. In that case, you should have automatically received an email to send to your Member of Congress and Senator asking them to co-sponsor this bill or thanking them if they're already co-sponsoring.

If you are not yet signed up for VV, you should be receiving an email to register soon.

You can also use the link below if you do not want to wait for the email to sign up for VV. Anybody who is an FPA member is welcome to use the template emails:
