President's Message:

We hope your spring is "hopping" off to a great start! Please take a moment to review the FPA of Michigan News and mark your calendars for our upcoming events.

Michigan does not have any pending legislation that would affect our profession at this time. Therefore, we are planning to do something different with our Advocacy initiatives this year as follows:

  • Rather than having an Advocacy Day at the capitol this spring, we are working to solidify a sponsor to champion a resolution next year to recognize April 2025 as Financial  Literacy Awareness Month in Michigan!
  • We plan to encourage the scheduling of in-district meetings with your legislators later this fall. Watch for details!
  • Our annual pro-bono virtual financial planning session for legislative staffers is scheduled for April 29th, 2024. We need volunteers for follow-up one-on-one sessions. See more information below!

If you have any questions, please contact Nick Nauta, our Advocacy Chair: nnauta@srbadvisors.com.

Pro Bono Volunteers needed for one-on-one meetings with Legislative Staffers!

On Monday, April 29th, the FPA of Michigan Pro Bono Committee will be hosting a pro bono event for State of Michigan legislative staffers. During this event, legislative staffers will hear a presentation on a broad overview of a variety of money topics, including budgeting, expense, debt, saving and retirement among other things. At the end of the presentation, staffers will be given the opportunity to sign up for one-on-one virtual meetings with FPA of Michigan volunteers. We are looking for FPA of Michigan members to volunteer to meet with staffers. If you are interested in volunteering to host a one-on-one appointment with a staffer, please click here to complete a short form. Please note, in order to volunteer for this opportunity, you do need to be a CFP® and have completed the FPA Pro Bono Training. FPA MI Mentorship Program

One of the best parts of the financial planning profession is the collaborative culture that exists within the industry. Often, we hear stories of altered career paths or lifelong friendships resulting from an introduction at a conference or other industry event. The FPA of Michigan desires to participate in promoting collaborative and supportive relationships for the next generation of industry talent and to do this, we have created the FPA of Michigan Mentorship Program

The goal of the Mentorship Program is to connect FPA Members with students who aspire to pursue a career in financial planning. The program allows the mentor to provide the mentee with “real world” advice and educate them on the different career paths available to financial professionals. Mentees will look to their mentors as a sounding board as they begin to navigate starting their financial planning careers.

Mentors and mentees will meet in-person or remotely three times between April and October and mentors will be invited to the student’s final capstone financial planning presentations at their schools. If you are a student interested in pursuing a career in financial planning and learning how to get started from a seasoned professional, consider signing up for the Mentorship Program today!

Whether you are interested in becoming a mentee or a mentor, click here to learn the next steps!

CoreCap Advisors is delighted to be a Community Partner of the FPA of Michigan for our second year. CoreCap, located in Southfield MI, is a $2.5B independent RIA and has been partnering with advisors for over a decade. Through our support, advisors can maintain their independence but not feel like they’re going it alone. One of the many ways we do this is through a coaching and training program to ensure advisor success. This partnership allows advisors to develop various facets of their business in a structured way.
