All Saints Sunday, November 7th
Greetings!
In early October, I made my first international trip in 18 months. During the course of the pandemic, I had spent time doing genealogy on my Norwegian family. In the process, I had discovered that there were actually a number of Danes in the family tree, and one had served as the bishop of the cathedral in Viborg, Denmark. So that was the destination for my international visit. Fortunately I had a Danish friend in Copenhagen who was able to accompany me on a day trip to Viborg.
Our guide through the cathedral was the present bishop of Viborg, Henrik Stubkjær, some 30 bishops after my ancestor had served. Fires had destroyed the city Viborg in the 17th century, so there was little left of the original cathedral my ancestor would have known. In the early 1900’s a Danish artist Joakim Skovgaard decorated the interior walls of the new cathedral with frescoes of scenes taken from the Old and New Testament. Directly above the altar is an image of Jesus seated upon the throne with a multitude of white robed saints processing before him, with palm branches in their hands. It is a powerful and enchanting depiction of one of the familiar portions of the Book of Revelation 7:0-10.
I will be thinking about that fresco in Viborg Cathedral, as we hear that passage from Revelation read as a part of our All Saints commemoration. Traditionally, we read it in between verses during the hymn of the day as we prepare to light candles and read the names of those who have died since the last All Saints Day. Certainly, there is a personal tie to that image in the Cathedral as I recall the generations of my own family who I never knew who descended from that holy place. And of course, there are those who I do know and remember, and who I trust are now standing before the throne of God day and night.

But this year, I am also struck with how many losses there have been within the lives of our own little community at Lake of the Isles. Some families were able to hold an appropriate and fitting memorial service to honor their loved one, while others had a simple graveside service. Some funerals were postponed, while as others waited, they discovered that the ceremony would become an occasion to honor the lives of both their parents who had died. Yes, through the course of the year, a handful became a mighty throng, all in a procession dressed in white robes with palm branches in their hands praising God. Their names and their memories are what we choose to remember as we celebrate God’s promise that we will be gathered together again.

May we all find our hope and consolation this
All Saints Day in the promise of Jesus seated on the throne wiping away every tear from our eye and making all things new.

Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

Remembrance Sunday
Sunday, November 14TH
At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns fell silent on the Western Front, to bring to an end the First World War. Our nation has recalled that moment on this day through the decades. And now over 100 years later, we remember lives sacrificed in the service of our country, and those traumatized and injured in battle.
Remembrance Sunday is one of the liturgical services for honoring veterans. It allows for a brief time of music, silence, wreath laying and a call to remember the fallen. Our service will feature the music of trumpeter Ben Alle.

Heart of Europe Tour Revisited
April 25 - May 7, 2022
Hungary, Slovakia, Austria & Czech Republic
Of course, none of us knows what the pandemic will bring to European travel, and it never hurts to dream. But just in case, Pastor Haug is planning on a possible springtime trip to the Heart of Europe in 2022. The tour will visit many of the great cities along the Moldau and Danube Rivers, Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Salzburg, Cesky Krumlov & Prague. Unfortunately, the Oberammergau Passion Play will not be a part of this trip. More information will be available in the coming weeks.
