Skimmers: Peril at the Pump?

A "skimmer" is a device used by criminals to steal credit card information. These devices are typically placed on ATMs, gas station pumps, or other card readers to capture the data from the magnetic stripe of a credit or debit card. Skimmers can be hard to detect and often appear to be a normal part of the machine.

Protecting yourself from a skimmer involves being vigilant and taking several precautions when using any point-of-sale systems where you need to swipe or insert your card. Here are some practical steps you can follow:

Inspect the Card Reader

  • Check for Tampering: Look for any unusual parts or signs of tampering on the card reader. If anything looks out of place, loose, or misaligned, avoid using that machine.
  • Compare Machines: If you’re at a location with multiple ATMs or gas pumps, compare the one you’re about to use with others. Differences can indicate tampering.

Use Secure Machines

  • Prefer Indoor ATMs: Use ATMs located inside banks or well-monitored locations rather than outdoor ATMs.
  • Choose Secure Gas Pumps: At gas stations, use pumps closest to the building, as they are less likely to be tampered with due to higher visibility.

Protect Your PIN

  • Cover the Keypad: When entering your PIN, use your hand or body to shield the keypad from any hidden cameras or onlookers.
  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Ensure no one is standing too close or acting suspiciously while you enter your PIN.

Use Advanced Payment Methods

  • Use Chip or Contactless Payments: Chip cards and contactless payments (like Apple Pay or Google Pay) are more secure than magnetic stripe transactions.
  • Enable Mobile Alerts, such as Union State Bank's CardValet®: Set up alerts for your card transactions to quickly spot any unauthorized activity.

Regular Monitoring and Alerts

  • Check Your Statements: Regularly review your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions.
  • Set Up Alerts: USB provides free, real-time fraud protection alerts using EnFact. To take full advantage of this service make sure the bank always has your most current contact information on file.

Report Suspicious Activity

  • Notify Your Bank: If you notice any suspicious activity or think you might have used a compromised machine, contact your bank immediately.
  • Report to Authorities: Inform the local police or relevant authorities about the compromised machine to prevent others from falling victim.

By following these steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to skimming and protect your financial information.
