Preparing Our Hearts for Advent
One of my favorite childhood memories is waiting for Christmas morning. I would squeeze our eyes shut on Christmas Eve, convinced that the faster I fell asleep, the sooner morning would come. But as anyone who has tried to sleep while brimming with excitement knows, the waiting itself became part of the magic. That tension between the “already” and the “not yet”—knowing the gifts were ready but not quite within our grasp—shaped the joy we experienced when morning finally arrived.
Advent, too, invites us into a time of joyful anticipation. It’s a season of waiting, hope, and preparation—not just for the celebration of Christmas but for the arrival of Christ in our hearts and lives. It’s easy to get swept up in the bustle of holiday preparations, but Advent asks us to slow down, to wait with intention, and to open ourselves to the transformative love of the Christ Child.
How, then, do we deepen our relationship with Christ during this holy season? Perhaps it starts with rediscovering the sacredness of waiting. Advent isn’t about rushing to get to Christmas; it’s about making room in our hearts and lives for the One who comes to bring peace and hope to a weary world.
Here are a few ways we might embrace this time of waiting and hope:
Carve Out Quiet Moments
Amid the noise of the season, take time for stillness. Light an Advent candle, sit in prayer, or simply pause to reflect on the gifts of hope, peace, joy, and love that Christ offers us. These moments of quiet can help ground us in the true meaning of Advent.
Engage with Scripture
Reading the Advent lectionary passages can draw us closer to the stories of anticipation and promise. Reflect on Mary’s “yes,” the words of the prophets, and the shepherds’ awe as you imagine yourself in their place, waiting for the Christ Child.
Practice Generosity
Advent reminds us of God’s boundless love for humanity. Look for opportunities to share that love with others—whether through acts of kindness, supporting those in need, or offering words of encouragement to someone who feels forgotten.
Create a Ritual of Hope
Consider adopting a simple ritual, such as writing down prayers of gratitude or lighting an Advent wreath with your family. These small acts can help you focus on the season’s themes and invite Christ’s presence into your daily life.
This Advent, let’s remember that the waiting itself is sacred. As we light each candle on the wreath, as we pray and prepare our hearts, let us remember that Christ is not only coming—He is already with us. The love of the Christ Child is a gift for all, one that calls us to transform our lives and embrace the hope, peace, and joy He brings.
May this season of anticipation fill your heart with wonder, deepen your connection to Christ, and prepare you to welcome the greatest Gift of all.
With blessings and love,
