Message from Rabbi Charlie

Shalom Y'all!

Our Chagim (Major Holy Days) have come to an end and outside of Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh (the new month), we won’t have another holiday until Hanukkah. We still have the sukkah to take down on Sunday and my apologies for the delay in getting you my High Holy Day sermons. We’re working with our livestreaming company and it will take just a little longer. We’ll get them out as soon as we can. And we still have a lot going on —- Like a Brit Mitzvah this weekend! Join us this weekend as Harper Lyerly is called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah! Another reason for our entire community to come together to celebrate!

On Kol Nidrei (Yom Kippur Evening), I spoke about the importance of Jewish community, even when we disagree. And I mentioned that in November (14th-16th) that we’ll have a Shabbaton dedicated to increase our ability to productively disagree while reducing the toxic polarization in our lives. I want to extend an invitation to participate in this important weekend sponsored by Lifelong Learning. We’re excited to welcome Rabbi Fred Reeves from the One America Movement. See below for more information.

In our broader community, we have two additional opportunities to show up and offer support. The first is this Sunday afternoon. It would be great if you could join me, our Social Action Committee, and our Confirmation Class at the CROP Walk to raise funds and awareness about hunger and poverty worldwide and within our own community. Temple Emanuel has been participating every year for two decades. Come be a part of this great tradition. See below for more information.

And the second big community event will be a major IAF Community Organizing update on Monday, November 2nd from 6pm-8pm. It’s taken a few years to get organized. And now, we’ll come together to learn about all of the hard work that’s been done. You’ll hear from our Research-Action Teams - their vision for winnable proposals on:

  • Affordable Housing
  • Homelessness
  • Education
  • Mental Health

These are issues identified by you and over 1000 others through listening sessions throughout the county. This meeting is a test of our capacity - I’m hoping for good TE representation so that we can issue a real call to action and launch a real campaign to address these issues in 2026! To learn more, please reach out to me, Karen Dorr, Jean Fromson, Sid Shapiro, or Fred Lewis!

And finally - we were able to say “Shehecheyanu” on Monday night at Simchat Torah after the return of 20 living hostages. And we have a long road ahead before we move from a ceasefire to a sustainable peace. Here are a few of the things that I’ve been reading this week:

There is much more to read - the ongoing effort to return the remains of all hostages, stories of those who returned to their families, how hostages were treated in captivity, reactions from Gazans - it’s a lot.

Looking forward to seeing y’all soon!

Bivracha (with Blessing)!

Rabbi Charlie
