The Voice That Calls Us By Name: A reflection on this week's Collect
O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
There is something deeply tender in this week’s Collect. Our world is full of noise, demands, breaking headlines, endless opinions, and competing voices. Together, we pray to the One whose Son is the Good Shepherd. We pray to the One who calls us each by name.
By name.
Not by title or by success or failure or politics or productivity.
Not even by the labels the world places upon us.
By name.
The image of the Good Shepherd in scripture carries warmth, intimacy, protection, and trust. Shepherds knew their sheep personally. They walked with them, guarded them, searched for them when they wandered, and stayed with them through danger and uncertainty. The sheep learned the shepherd’s voice because they heard it consistently, faithfully, lovingly.
I wonder if one of the great spiritual struggles of our time is learning how to hear that voice again.
So many people today live exhausted. Distracted. Spiritually overwhelmed. We move quickly from one obligation to another while carrying silent burdens in our hearts. Fear grows loud. Anxiety grows loud. Anger grows loud. Shame grows loud. Yet the voice of Christ still speaks, quietly and steadily beneath it all.
“Come to me.”
“Peace be with you.”
“Do not be afraid.”
“Follow me.”
The voice of the Good Shepherd never manipulates through fear or humiliation. Christ leads through love. Through invitation. Through mercy. Through truth.
And perhaps that is the heart of this Collect. We are praying for recognition. We are praying for spiritual clarity. We are praying for hearts attuned enough to recognize the voice of Love amid the chaos of the world.
“Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him…”
There is a difference between hearing and knowing.
Many sounds compete for our attention every day. The deeper question is this: which voice are we allowing to shape our lives? Which voice is forming our hearts? Which voice is guiding our decisions, our relationships, our fears, our hopes?
The Good Shepherd leads toward compassion, courage, justice, forgiveness, healing, and abundant life. Even when the road is difficult, Christ always leads toward life.
And perhaps the most beautiful line of all is this: “who calls us each by name.”
Friends, you are not forgotten by God.
You are known, seen. called and loved.
In a culture that so often reduces human beings to categories, transactions, and divisions, the Gospel reminds us that Christ still sees the sacred dignity of every single person.
This week, I invite you to spend a few moments in quiet each day. Step away from the noise when you can. Breathe deeply. Pray honestly. Listen gently. Ask yourself: What voice am I following?
And may we, together as the people of St. Mary’s, continue learning to recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd who lovingly calls each one of us by name and leads us toward grace.
With gratitude for each of you, and hope that is unfolding,
Mo. Allison+
