January 8, 2025

Greetings Presbytery Family!

Following epiphany many of us have been spending some time thinking about the light that came into the world and continues to come into the world. Matthew 5:14-16, states: "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." We are people of the light. In a world that at times can feel full of darkness where do we see the light breaking in? In what ways and places is God calling us to reflect the light? I believe we are called to look for the light, see the light, and reflect the light. I also believe we should spend some time basking in the light so that it might refresh our bodies and nurture our souls. As we move into 2025 let me encourage us all to look for places of rest and rejuvenation so we can offer and share our very best throughout the year and throughout our lives.

Peace,

David

Presbyterian Youth Triennium

July 28 – July 31, 2025

Louisville KY

The Presbytery of St. Augustine is planning to send a delegation of youth and their adult advisors to this event in July. For the first time, Triennium will be held in an urban, convention center setting, with accommodations at nearby designated hotels. Accordingly, we are inviting students who are currently in 10th, 11th and 12th grade to attend. (Younger students will have an opportunity to attend Triennium 2028.) Young adults aged 19-23 can register to attend as part of the work crew that will make it all happen. Adult advisors are also welcome to attend. Costs to attend are estimated to be approximately $1,000 per person (registration, air and ground transportation, double-occupancy accommodation, and meals.) Presbytery funding will cover approximately one-third of these costs.

For more information or to register to attend, please contact Vickie Bossuot at wbossuot@aol.com.

Back Together Again (Again)

Save the date for Back Together Again (Again)! The event will take place on January 11, 2025, at Montgomery Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is a day to gather from all ends of the Presbytery of St. Augustine to join together in fellowship, learning how to best serve the church locally and in the world through church officer training and spiritual development. Stay tuned for workshop listings! Registration can be found here.

Call to Serve

Are you called to serve God at the presbytery level? Several of our committees have positions that we need to fill to carry out our mission. We are looking for ruling elders and teaching elders that have time and energy to serve Christ beyond the local church. For more information, please contact Beth Touchton, Volunteer Management Committee Chair, or David Rollins, Lead Presbyter.

The following is a resource from ShareChurch and offers some insights worthy of reflection as we enter this new year.

2025: Let’s Get Busy!

One of the best lines from one of my favorite movies is Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption saying, “I guess it comes down to a simple choice, you know. Get busy living or get busy dying.” This applies to many moments in life and, perhaps, nowhere more frequently than in the lives of churches.

I have spent more than 30 years helping churches on three different continents with this simple choice – living or dying – and several things stand out among those that choose life. These characteristics, regardless of the church’s size, resources, or status, have been consistent among churches that are busy living. To be clear, I believe life involves growth, and growth involves change. In any church, choices that simply avoid change or prevent growth are ultimately choosing death.

So, what do churches that are busy living have in common?

Clarity about the ownership and purpose of the church.

Regardless of the church’s name or affiliation, its leaders and members understand it to be the Church of Jesus Christ. By this, I mean they know the church does not belong to them – it belongs to Jesus. As the Body of Christ, the church’s sole purpose for existing is to fulfill Jesus’ mission in this world, to follow what He said and reflect what He did. Jesus is not just the decorating theme; He is the determining factor in every decision.

Relentless outward focus.

This second characteristic flows naturally from the first. We have Jesus because “God so loved the world,”[1] and nothing less. In His own words, Jesus came to “seek and to save the lost.”[2] He said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[3] While Jesus clearly wanted us to be unified[4] and loving toward one another[5], a “church” that is inwardly focused – concerned first with what the congregation wants or needs – has lost touch with its purpose.

Willingness to do what others are not willing to do.

Finally, there is no magic to churches that are vital and growing. Most often, they are simply willing to do what others are not – like change. Whether it is something major like adding a worship service, changing worship style or times, or little things like clearing out clutter or parking and sitting somewhere else to make room for others, people in these churches choose life – even when it’s personally unfamiliar, uncomfortable or inconvenient – by living into the purpose of the church.

One of the perennial moments in life where Andy Dufresne’s quote seems particularly relevant is at the beginning of each new year. So, as we head into 2025 and all that God has in store for us in it, what choices do you need to make? What about your church?

Will you “get busy living or get busy dying”?
