The Call Center is vital to LHA because they connect our participants to every service needed. They were essential for the community when Covid-19 hit its highest cases back in December 2020. People were scared and desperate for help. Even though our team was also scared and going through the same issues, they stepped up by providing appointments, information, and emotional wellness support.

Sharing from her experience, our own Promotora Daisy Fuentes.

Daisy joined Latino Health Access in mid-December of 2020, which was the busiest, most demanding time that the call center had seen since the inception of a world pandemic. The volume of calls coming in was unprecedented. Callers were requesting testing appointments, financial assistance, and simple support and reassurance. As Daisy recounts, "I was so scared to mess up or be uninformed. I just wanted to help everyone as best as possible and provide some sense of security for them and their family. Information in the call center was changing with daily updates. Just as I was getting comfortable and more confident in the call center, life decided it had other plans for my family and me—two weeks into being hired at Latino Health Access, the virus hit my family. Thanks to my training, I was well informed and could help my family get tested for COVID. A couple of days after, I tested positive, and we were all coping with our symptoms while in isolation; that's when my stepdad started feeling worse. We took him to the emergency room, where they decided to keep him because of his difficulty breathing. He ended up being hospitalized for one month while being hooked to a ventilator and unfortunately passed from a COVID-19-related organ failure in late January 2021. The following month, I was able to get my mother, grandmother, and myself an appointment to get the COVID-19 vaccine. After everything we dealt with in such a short time, we did not hesitate to get the vaccine, and I always wonder how life would be different if we could've got my stepdad vaccinated. When I returned to work, I would listen to participants cry to me about their loved ones passing away from COVID-19, understanding from a personal experience. It was one of the hardest things I had to go through. The experience has left me with more empathy and understanding of others. I am still working at Latino Health Access, and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to work here and to help participants and their families navigate through one of the most challenging times in their life".
